Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Flagstaff.

Get a Flagstaff building permit before installing.

Flagstaff City Code 7-07-001-0003 says no one may install a wood heater or fireplace insert without first obtaining a permit from the building department, the installation must follow the manufacturer’s written specifications, and the appliance may not be operated until the city building inspector approves it. The city’s Building Safety section at 211 W Aspen Avenue takes applications through its Citizen Access Portal and offers a Plan Reviewer of the Day for code questions. The code text still cites the older Uniform codes, so ask Building Safety which current permit and inspections apply. Unincorporated addresses outside city limits go to Coconino County.

Fire-restriction stages target outdoor fires.

Flagstaff’s fire-restriction stages step up from Stage 0 to Stage 3. Stage 1 ends open-burning permits and bans fire pits without on/off switches; Stage 2 bans charcoal and wood barbecues at private residences; Stage 3 leaves only propane, gas and pellet grills with on/off switches. The city page does not mention indoor wood stoves or fireplaces, so these stages don’t restrict indoor heating, but check the current stage before any outdoor fire.

Buying a used stove? Check the label.

Flagstaff code bars advertising, selling or installing any wood heater or fireplace insert that exceeds 7.5 grams of particulate per hour for non-catalytic models or 4.1 grams for catalytic models, and says an EPA certification label is evidence it complies. An uncertified unit found out of compliance must be removed or replaced within 30 days of notice, or the owner faces a $10 daily fine. Antique heaters built before 1940, cook stoves and open masonry fireplaces are treated differently.

Show the insert on permit plans.

Flagstaff’s Building Safety checklist for residential permit applications asks applicants to indicate the location of appliances, including a fireplace insert, and says plans get an administrative completeness review before code review, with deferred submittals not accepted. The city’s permit page adds that incomplete applications restart the review timeline. Give the permit office the stove or insert model and its installation manual with your application.

What to ask a Flagstaff installer.

  1. Does this stove or insert carry an EPA certification label that meets Flagstaff’s code 7-07 limits?
  2. Will you get the Flagstaff building permit and schedule the inspection so I can legally light it?
  3. Is my address inside Flagstaff city limits or in unincorporated Coconino County, and which office permits it?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Answers before you request a quote

Flagstaff wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I install an older or used wood stove in Flagstaff?

Only if it meets the city’s emission limits. Flagstaff code 7-07 has barred selling or installing a wood heater or insert above EPA Phase II limits since 1992, and an EPA label is the evidence. A noncompliant unit can be ordered removed or replaced within 30 days, with daily fines after that. Check the label before paying for a used stove.

Do Flagstaff’s fire restrictions stop me using my wood stove?

The city’s fire-restriction stages, as published, cover outdoor fires: open-burning permits, fire pits and charcoal or wood barbecues. The page does not mention indoor stoves or fireplaces. Clean your chimney regularly in wildfire country, and check with the city if you’re unsure about a particular device.

How cold does Flagstaff get for backup heat planning?

NOAA’s 1991–2020 December normal at FLAGSTAFF PULLIAM AP is 30.0°F. Nearby stations vary with elevation, so homes lower down may be milder. A monthly average does not show the coldest nights or outage length, so plan wood storage and room layout with your installer rather than expecting whole-house heat.
