Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Greeley.

Apply to Greeley Building Inspection through eTRAKiT.

Inside Greeley city limits, the Building Inspection Division at 1100 10th Street handles permit applications and reviews. The city says a permit is needed to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move or demolish a building, and for installing or modifying electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing systems. Applications go through the eTRAKiT portal, and homeowners can apply directly using the city’s 2026 Homeowner Affidavit. Greeley enforces the 2021 International Residential Code. The page does not name wood stoves or inserts, so ask which permit a stove, insert or chimney liner needs. Addresses in Evans, Garden City or unincorporated Weld County are outside the city, so confirm the jurisdiction first.

Greeley building permits and inspections

Greeley has its own high-pollution rule, tied to the county.

CDPHE’s winter Action Day restrictions cover seven metro Denver counties, not Weld. Greeley’s code has its own rule instead: Sec. 12-104 bars operating a solid-fuel heating device, other than a certified stove or insert or an uncertified one with an approved retrofit kit, on a high-pollution day declared by the county health department, after a five-hour burn-down. We did not find current county declarations for indoor burning, but a certified stove stays usable either way.

Greeley Code Sec. 12-104

Reinstalling an old stove? You may need a retrofit kit.

Greeley Code Sec. 12-104(d) says no one may install a new freestanding or insert wood stove unless it is certified, and no one may reinstall a noncertified wood stove unless an approved retrofit antipollution kit is available and installed first. If you are moving an older stove into a Greeley house, ask Building Inspection how that is checked before you commit to it.

Greeley Code Sec. 12-104

Counting on the sole-heat exemption? It covers only pre-1987 devices.

Greeley’s exemptions from the high-pollution-day rule for sole source of heat or economic need apply only to devices installed before October 1, 1987, need a sworn statement or proof of eligibility, and last 12 months. A house with a permanently installed furnace, even if disconnected, does not count as sole-source heat. A newly installed stove will not qualify, so choose a certified model.

Greeley Code Sec. 12-104

Buying a stove? The statewide rule applies here too.

Colorado’s Regulation No. 4 has barred advertising, selling or installing a new wood-burning stove that does not meet EPA emission standards anywhere in the state since May 15, 2020. CDPHE notes that selling a used, uncertified stove is barred only in the seven-county metro Denver area, so used stoves may still be offered around Greeley; Greeley’s own code still limits reinstalling one.

What to ask a Greeley installer.

  1. Is this stove or insert certified, as Greeley Code Sec. 12-104(d) requires for a new installation, and will you give me the paperwork?
  2. Will you apply for the Greeley permit in eTRAKiT and book the inspection, and are you licensed with the city?
  3. If I reuse an older stove, is an approved retrofit kit available, or should I replace it?

Answers before you request a quote

Greeley wood stove installation FAQs.

Do metro Denver Action Days apply in Greeley?

No. CDPHE’s indoor-burning Action Day restrictions cover Denver, Boulder, Broomfield, Douglas and Jefferson counties and parts of Adams and Arapahoe, not Weld. Greeley has its own ordinance, Sec. 12-104, that restricts uncertified devices on high-pollution days declared by the county health department. We found no current county declarations for indoor burning.

Can I install a used or older wood stove in Greeley?

Greeley’s code bars installing a new wood stove or insert that is not certified, and bars reinstalling an uncertified stove unless an approved retrofit antipollution kit is available and installed first. In practice that makes a current EPA-certified model the simpler choice. Ask Building Inspection how certification is checked at permit or inspection.

Can I use the stove as outage heat?

A certified stove or insert is exempt from Greeley’s high-pollution-day rule, so the city ordinance should not stop you burning in an outage. The sole-heat and economic-need exemptions cover only devices installed before October 1, 1987. Burn only clean, dry wood; Greeley’s code also regulates burning refuse.
