Wood stove permits in Middletown.

The Building Division at 245 deKoven Drive issues it.

Inside Middletown, permits come from the Building Division of Public Works at 245 deKoven Drive, 2nd floor (860-638-4870), open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Apply online or email or mail the paperwork; applications are not reviewed until payment, by check or money order only, and all required documents arrive. Contractors must include their license and insurance certificates. Homeowners doing the work themselves file a notarized 7B workers’ compensation form; owners applying for a hired contractor file a 7A form. City pages do not name wood stoves, so ask which permit box a stove, insert or liner goes under. Cromwell, Portland and Middlefield have their own building officials.

Middletown Building Division

Outdoor wood furnaces are out; indoor stoves are not.

Chapter 126 of Middletown’s code, amended in 2010, says no one may construct, install, modify, operate or use an outdoor wood-burning furnace unless it was already installed or in use before the section took effect and complies with Public Act 05-227. Existing units can be cited for heavy smoke or odors. The rule covers boilers set outside the house, not indoor stoves or inserts, and the same chapter bans open burning except barbecues without a fire district permit.

Fees follow job cost, labor included.

Middletown’s posted permit fee sheet charges $28.26 for the first $1,000 of estimated cost and $15.26 for each further $1,000, counted thousand to thousand with no pro-rating; its example puts a $1,500 job at $43.52. Owners doing their own work must still include a fair market labor cost in the estimate. No refunds are given once an application is submitted and paid, and a third inspection after two failures costs $75.

Only portable heaters skip the permit.

Middletown’s handout on work exempt from permits lists, under mechanical work, portable heating appliances with a self-contained fuel supply, portable ventilation and cooling units and minor part replacements. A wood stove or insert connected to a chimney is not on the list, so plan on a permit and inspection. The handout’s file dates to 2018, so confirm it still matches the current Connecticut code.

Historic districts: ask Land Use first.

Middletown’s Design Review and Preservation Board, set up by ordinance in 1998, is advisory: it reviews exterior rehabilitation and new construction in business zones and advises the Planning and Zoning Commission. Its page links districts such as Broad Street, South Green, Washington Street and the Downtown Village District. It does not say a house needs review for a new chimney, so if yours is downtown or in one of these districts, ask Land Use before the building permit.

What to ask a Middletown installer.

  1. Will you file the Middletown permit with a copy of your contractor license and insurance, and is the permit fee check in your quote?
  2. Which box on Middletown’s application will the stove, liner and chimney go under: building, HVAC or both?
  3. Given the city’s 7–10 day inspection lead time, how will you schedule the final inspection before we light the stove?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Answers before you request a quote

Middletown wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I install a wood stove myself in Middletown?

The Building Division accepts homeowner applications, but a homeowner doing the work files a notarized 7B workers’ compensation form with the check for the fee. The estimate must still include a fair market labor cost. City pages do not say which permit a stove needs, so call 860-638-4870 before buying materials, and book inspections by phone.

What does a stove permit cost in Middletown?

The posted fee sheet charges $28.26 for the first $1,000 of estimated materials and labor and $15.26 for each $1,000 after that, with no pro-rating. Fees are paid by check or money order, are not refunded once the application is submitted, and a third inspection after two failures costs $75. Confirm the total when you apply.

Can I put in an outdoor wood boiler instead of an indoor stove?

Not a new one. Middletown’s code, amended in 2010, bars constructing, installing or operating an outdoor wood-burning furnace unless it was already installed or in use before the section took effect, and existing units can be cited for heavy smoke or odors. Indoor wood stoves and inserts are not covered by that rule but need a building permit.
