Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Caldwell.

Get Caldwell’s Fire Department solid-fuel permit first.

Caldwell City Code 07-07-03, adopted in 1988, makes it unlawful to install a solid fuel heating appliance in any new or existing structure in the city without first getting a solid fuel heating appliance permit from the Fire Department. The Fire Marshal can deny a permit, and the applicant has ten working days to appeal to the city’s Solid Fuel Heating Appliance Appeals and Advisory Board. The Fire Department’s permit page does not list a form for this, so call Fire Prevention (208-649-1266) and ask the Building Safety Division whether its mechanical permit is also needed. Addresses in unincorporated Canyon County or Nampa are not permitted by Caldwell.

Caldwell’s AQI limit is on outdoor burning.

Idaho DEQ’s table of Treasure Valley ordinances lists Caldwell with one tier: when the AQI reaches 60 or more, no open or outdoor burning, while fireplaces and all woodstoves stay okay. Unincorporated Canyon County is listed differently: at AQI 74 or more, fireplaces and noncertified woodstoves must stop and only certified woodstoves may burn. Check DEQ’s daily Treasure Valley forecast and confirm whether your address is inside Caldwell.

Buying a stove? Bring proof of certification.

Caldwell code 07-07-03(B) has made it unlawful since July 1, 1988 to offer to sell, sell for installation, or install a solid fuel heating appliance not certified by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, and requires the owner to provide proof of certification. That 1988 wording predates today’s EPA program, so ask the Fire Marshal what paperwork the city accepts, and keep the stove’s certification label and manual.

Outside city limits? Canyon County splits it.

Canyon County Development Services’ mechanical permit application (revised September 2023) covers built-in woodstoves and pellet stoves for $80 each plus $60 for venting, but says the county does not handle any freestanding pellet stoves, woodstoves or fireplaces; those permits are pulled with the Idaho Division of Building Safety. This applies to unincorporated county addresses, not to homes inside Caldwell.

What to ask a Caldwell installer.

  1. Will you get the Caldwell Fire Department’s solid fuel heating appliance permit before installing, and any city mechanical permit too?
  2. What certification paperwork will you give me for this stove to satisfy Caldwell code 07-07-03?
  3. Is my address inside Caldwell or in unincorporated Canyon County, where freestanding stoves are permitted through the state?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Caldwell wood stove installation FAQs.

Who issues a wood stove permit in Caldwell?

Caldwell’s code puts it with the Fire Department: installing a solid fuel heating appliance requires a Fire Department permit first, and a Fire Marshal denial can be appealed to the Solid Fuel Heating Appliance Appeals and Advisory Board within ten working days. Ask the Building Safety Division too, since it also issues residential mechanical permits.

Can I burn my stove on poor air-quality days in Caldwell?

Idaho DEQ’s Treasure Valley table lists Caldwell’s rule as stopping open and outdoor burning at AQI 60, with fireplaces and all woodstoves still okay. Unincorporated Canyon County stops fireplaces and noncertified woodstoves at AQI 74. Rules can change, so check DEQ’s forecast and confirm your address is inside Caldwell.

I live outside Caldwell city limits. What changes?

The city’s Fire Department permit rule applies inside Caldwell. In unincorporated Canyon County, the county’s mechanical permit form covers only built-in woodstoves and says freestanding stoves and fireplaces are permitted through the Idaho Division of Building Safety. Confirm the right office for your parcel before buying equipment.
