Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Nampa.

Get a mechanical permit from Nampa Development Services.

Nampa City Code 4-10-2.A makes it unlawful to install solid fuel heating equipment in any new or existing structure until you obtain a mechanical permit from the building department and complete the required approval and inspection before operating it. Apply through the city’s online permit portal or at Development Services, 500 12th Ave S (208-468-5435). The city’s mechanical permit pages do not name wood stoves, so ask which inspections apply to your stove, chimney or insert. Nampa is its own permitting authority; addresses in unincorporated Canyon County or neighbouring cities such as Caldwell and Meridian are not permitted by Nampa, so confirm the jurisdiction for the property.

Nampa City Code Title 4, Chapter 10: Solid fuel heating equipment

Nampa’s air-quality limit targets outdoor burning.

Idaho DEQ’s table of Treasure Valley ordinances lists Nampa with one restriction: when the AQI reaches 60 or more, no open or outdoor burning, while fireplaces and all woodstoves remain okay. The same table lists stricter tiers elsewhere: Boise stops all woodstoves at 74, and Canyon County stops fireplaces and noncertified woodstoves at 74. Confirm whether your address is inside Nampa or in unincorporated Canyon County, and check DEQ’s daily forecast.

Idaho DEQ Treasure Valley local burn ordinances

Stoves sold in Nampa must meet city criteria.

Nampa code 4-10-2.B, in effect since 2008, bars selling solid fuel heating equipment for installation unless it meets listed criteria: an air-to-fuel ratio averaging under 35 to 1, a firebox under 20 cubic feet, a maximum burn rate under 5 kg per hour and a weight under 800 kg. Furnaces, boilers, cook stoves and open fireplaces are excluded. Section 4-10-3 lets the building official grant an exemption for a sole heat source or economic hardship.

Doing it yourself? Check the owner rule.

Nampa says permitted mechanical work must be installed by a licensed mechanical contractor with a valid Idaho contractor’s license. The exception: owners of certain residential occupancies may do the work themselves if they live in the dwelling for 180 days after installation is completed, and family members may help relatives who cannot do the work. Either way, the permit and inspection still apply.

Replacing an uncertified stove? Idaho offers a deduction.

Idaho Code 63-3022C treats a wood stove meeting current EPA certification as an alternative energy device when, in the same tax year, it replaces a residential wood stove that does not meet EPA certification and the old stove is surrendered to DEQ or its agent for destruction. The deduction is 40 percent of cost in the first year and 20 percent in each of the next three years, capped at $5,000 per year.

What to ask a Nampa installer.

  1. Will you pull the Nampa mechanical permit and schedule the inspection before I light the stove, as city code requires?
  2. Does this stove meet Nampa’s sale criteria in code 4-10-2.B and carry EPA certification for Idaho’s tax deduction?
  3. If I’m replacing an uncertified stove, will you arrange its surrender to DEQ for destruction and give me paperwork?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Answers before you request a quote

Nampa wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I use my wood stove on poor air-quality days in Nampa?

Idaho DEQ’s Treasure Valley table lists Nampa’s rule as stopping open and outdoor burning when the AQI reaches 60, while fireplaces and all woodstoves stay okay. That differs from Boise and unincorporated Canyon County, which DEQ lists with stove limits at 74. Rules can change, so check DEQ’s daily forecast and the city before burning.

Can I install a wood stove myself in Nampa?

Possibly. Nampa requires permitted mechanical work to be done by a licensed Idaho mechanical contractor, but owners of certain residential occupancies may install it themselves if they live in the home for 180 days afterwards. You still need the mechanical permit and must pass inspection before operating the stove under code 4-10-2.

Is there a tax break for replacing an old stove in Idaho?

Idaho Code 63-3022C allows a deduction when a wood stove meeting current EPA certification replaces an uncertified residential wood stove in the same tax year, and the old stove is surrendered to DEQ or its agent for destruction. The deduction is spread over four years and capped at $5,000 per year. Confirm details with a tax professional.
