Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Addison.

Apply through the village portal before work starts.

Inside Addison, permits come from the Community Development Department’s Building Division at Village Hall, 1 Friendship Plaza (630-693-7530, building@addison-il.org). All applications are filed online through the village portal, and the village says permits are needed for most home improvements. Most applications take up to 10 business days for a first review, so it advises getting approval before buying materials. The village adopts the 2024 International Residential and Mechanical Codes, and its exempt list covers portable heating appliances, not fixed stoves. The permits page doesn’t name wood stoves or inserts, so ask the Building Division which permit type and fee apply.

Village of Addison: Building Permits

Wood from diseased trees has limits.

If you plan to burn wood from your own lot, check Addison’s nuisance vegetation rules first. When the village orders removal of trees with Dutch elm disease or oak wilt, the logs and branches may not be stored or used as firewood unless all bark has been removed; wood from emerald ash borer trees may not be kept or used as firewood at all. The same chapter makes it a nuisance to dump soot or stovepipe and chimney contents in public places.

Expect a fireplace inspection before walls close.

Addison’s building code lists the inspections required under a permit. For a masonry fireplace, the inspection comes after the firebox is built and before the chimney goes up; for a prefab fireplace, after the firebox, chimney and fire stopping are installed and before they are concealed. The code also says no inspection happens unless the permit card is displayed and the approved plans are on site. Ask how a stove or liner job is scheduled.

Unpermitted work pays twice.

Addison’s building code says anyone who performs work without first getting the required permit must obtain it after the fact and pay twice the permit fee before continuing, on top of any other penalties. The Building Official can also issue a written stop work order. Since the village’s flat-fee list has no line for stoves or fireplaces, ask for the fee in writing before work starts so the doubling is easy to avoid.

What to ask a Addison installer.

  1. Will you file the permit through Addison’s online portal, and which permit type and fee did the Building Division assign?
  2. When will the fireplace or chimney inspection happen, and will you leave the chimney and fire stopping open until it passes?
  3. Which license copies and letter of intent will you upload with the application?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

Answers before you request a quote

Addison wood stove installation FAQs.

Does Addison require a permit for a wood stove or insert?

Addison says building permits are needed for most home improvements, and its exempt list covers portable heating appliances, not fixed stoves. Its code lists fireplace inspections, so expect a permit and an inspection. The permits page doesn’t name stoves, so call the Building Division at 630-693-7530 to confirm the permit type and fee.

How long does an Addison permit take?

The village says most applications can take up to 10 business days for an initial review, and plans may need changes before a permit is issued. Corrections restart the review clock. Only a few simple permits, such as single-family roofs, are typically approved within 24 hours, so allow time before your install date.

Can I burn wood from trees removed on my Addison lot?

Not always. Addison’s nuisance code says logs from trees with Dutch elm disease or oak wilt may not be stored or used as firewood unless all bark has been removed, and wood from emerald ash borer trees may not be used as firewood at all. Season any allowed wood well before burning it in a stove.
