Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Algonquin.

Apply to Community Development at the Ganek Municipal Center.

Inside the village, Algonquin’s Community Development Department, 2200 Harnish Drive, reviews plans, issues building permits and inspects work; McHenry and Kane counties don’t. The village says a permit is needed before you alter, repair or improve any building, and its online application lists a ‘Firepit/ Fireplace’ project type and asks for a plat of survey. Review may take up to five weeks, the permits page says, though the application says to expect two. Algonquin enforces the 2018 International Residential and Mechanical Codes. No village page names wood stoves or inserts, so ask permits@algonquin.org or 847-658-2700, option 3, which project type and fee your stove, insert or liner falls under.

Village of Algonquin: Permit Information

In the Old Town District, the Historic Commission signs off too.

Algonquin’s Certificate of Appropriateness application says all permits for alteration, repair or any other physical change to a property in the Old Town District need a certificate issued by the Historic Commission at the same time, though minor alterations may be approved internally. The application asks for drawings, photos and manufacturer’s illustrations of exterior changes and lists roof changes and skylights among work types. A new chimney, chase or roof flue is exterior work, so send the COA application to permits@algonquin.org with the permit.

The fireplace fee is flat, but extensions and reinspections cost more.

Appendix B of the Village Code, in the version dated 5/19/26, lists ‘Fireplace’ at $45.00 among miscellaneous permits. The same schedule charges $45.00 per reinspection, and permit extensions must be requested in writing: 25% of the permit fee for the first six months, 50% for the second and 100% for the third, each with a $45 minimum. Confirm with the village whether a stove or insert is billed on the fireplace line or as mechanical work.

Applying isn’t permission to start.

The village’s Building Permit Process sheet (revised 8/25/2022) says applying for a permit does not allow you to start work: wait until staff notify you that it is issued, then keep the permit on the job site. It says the owner or contractor is responsible for making sure every inspection is completed, and inspections can be requested online, by email to permits@algonquin.org or at 847-658-2700, option 3. Self-inspection is offered only for items such as windows, fences and driveways, not stoves.

What to ask a Algonquin installer.

  1. Will you file Algonquin’s permit with the plat of survey, and will my stove or insert be billed on the $45 fireplace line or as mechanical work?
  2. If my house is in the Old Town District, will you prepare the drawings and product sheets the Historic Commission needs before plan review?
  3. Is my address on the McHenry or Kane County side of the village, and does that change whether you travel here?

Answers before you request a quote

Algonquin wood stove installation FAQs.

Does Algonquin require a permit for a wood stove?

The village says a building permit is needed before you alter, repair or improve any building, and its online application has a ‘Firepit/ Fireplace’ project type that requires a plat of survey. No village page names wood stoves or inserts, so ask Community Development (847-658-2700, option 3) which project type applies before work starts. The 2026 fee schedule lists a fireplace permit at $45.00.

My house is in Old Town Algonquin. What changes?

The village’s Certificate of Appropriateness application says any permit for alteration or repair of a property in the Old Town District needs a certificate from the Historic Commission issued at the same time, and the permit process sheet says the commission approves before plan review, except for roof and interior permits. A new chimney, chase or roof flue is exterior work, so plan for that review.

Algonquin sits in two counties. Does that matter?

For the permit, no: the Village of Algonquin’s Community Development Department issues permits across the village, whether a home is in McHenry or Kane County. It can matter for installers, though. Some name only McHenry County or only specific towns, so tell each one your exact address and ask whether it travels there before booking a visit.
