Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Aurora.

Start with the Division of Building and Permits at 77 S. Broadway.

Aurora spans parts of Kane, DuPage, Kendall and Will counties, but inside city limits the Division of Building and Permits handles plan review, inspections and permits; its historic-review form simply asks which of the four counties the parcel sits in. The Division links to the city’s eTRAKiT online permit portal. The online permit list does not name wood stoves or inserts, and the 2026 fee schedule lists furnace replacement rather than solid-fuel appliances, so ask the Division which application covers your stove, insert, liner or chimney. Aurora adopts the 2024 International Residential and Mechanical Codes with local amendments. Unincorporated addresses near Aurora fall to their county instead.

City of Aurora: Division of Building and Permits

A wood stove can’t be the home’s main heat.

Aurora’s amendments to the property maintenance code (Sec. 12-102) state that a fireplace or wood-burning appliance shall not be used as the primary heat source, and they set a heat-supply season of September 23 to May 5. Plan a stove as supplemental or outage heat alongside a working furnace or boiler, not as a replacement for it. This matters most for rentals and for anyone thinking of removing an existing heating system.

Aurora Code of Ordinances, Chapter 12 (Sec. 12-102)

Ask whether your installer is registered with Aurora.

Aurora Code Sec. 12-16.4 requires contractor registration. HVAC contractors register under Sec. 12-16.4.2.1, and Sec. 12-16.4.2.2 adds a separate Fireplace Installation Contractors category whose qualifying party must present credentials the Building Official accepts, such as the National Fireplace Institute’s Wood & Gas Fireplace Certification. Ask each installer for its Aurora registration number, which the city’s historic-review form also asks for.

In a historic district, chimney replacement needs a COA.

Aurora requires a Historic Certificate of Appropriateness before alteration, exterior construction or exterior demolition of a local landmark or a property in a local historic district. The city’s 2019 HCOA form lists non-structural chimney tuck-pointing as needing no additional permit, but chimney replacement and structural repair as needing additional permits. Minor changes can be approved by staff; major ones go to a Preservation Commission subcommittee first.

What to ask a Aurora installer.

  1. Are you registered with the City of Aurora, and under the HVAC or the fireplace installation contractor category?
  2. Which Aurora permit application covers this stove or insert, and will you file it through eTRAKiT?
  3. If my home is in a local historic district, does the chimney or liner work need a Historic Certificate of Appropriateness first?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Answers before you request a quote

Aurora wood stove installation FAQs.

My Aurora address is in Kendall or Will County. Who issues the permit?

If the property is inside Aurora city limits, the city’s Division of Building and Permits handles it regardless of county; its historic-review form simply asks which of Kane, DuPage, Kendall or Will the parcel is in. Unincorporated land with an Aurora mailing address is handled by the county instead, so confirm your parcel’s jurisdiction first.

Can a wood stove be the only heat in an Aurora house?

No. Aurora’s property maintenance amendments say a fireplace or wood-burning appliance shall not be used as the primary heat source. A stove can supplement a furnace or provide heat during an outage, but keep a working primary system, especially in a rental.

Does Aurora check who installs a fireplace or stove?

Aurora’s code requires contractor registration and includes a Fireplace Installation Contractors category, citing National Fireplace Institute certification as an example qualification. Ask each installer for its Aurora registration number and which category it holds, and confirm with the Division of Building and Permits which registration your job needs.
