Inside the village, permits come from the Community Development Department’s Building Division at the Civic Center, 535 Duane Street (630-469-5000). Applications are filed and signed electronically in the LAMA permit system, with plans and equipment information uploaded as PDFs; the page says construction plans are to be stamped by an Illinois registered design professional. Approved permits must be posted where they can be seen from the street. The village applies the 2018 residential, mechanical and fire codes, with local amendments, to applications received after January 1, 2024. Neither page names wood stoves, so ask staff which permit type, fee line and plan detail a stove or insert needs.
Village of Glen Ellyn: Building DivisionGlen Ellyn’s Historic Preservation Maintenance and Alteration Guidelines (2009 edition) say chimneys help define a home’s character. They ask owners to retain existing brick chimneys, avoid cement-like coatings, restore documented original designs and repoint with a lime and very low Portland cement mortar. For new construction they say metal pipe chimneys should not be visible from the front roof plane. Relining an old flue for an insert fits this guidance better than a new exterior pipe.
Glen Ellyn Historic Preservation Maintenance and Alteration Guidelines (2009 edition, PDF)The village’s review sheet for landmarked homes says maintenance, in-kind replacement and interior remodeling need no Historic Preservation Commission review, while a new roof that is not in kind, additions, and non-matching street-visible windows and doors do. If a stove job adds a new chimney or changes the roof on a landmark, file an Application for Alteration of Landmarked Property with Community Development first. The sheet covers landmarked homes only.
Glen Ellyn: Commission Review Requirements, landmarked homes (PDF)Village Code Sec. 4-1-4, last amended by Ord. No. 7170 in February 2025, lists ‘Other (ex: fireplace, storage tank installation/removal)’ at 100 among miscellaneous permits. Residential additions, alterations and remodeling are 1.25% of construction cost, with no permit below $500. Permit fees cover up to two plan reviews. Ask the Building Division whether your stove or insert is billed as a fireplace line or as part of a remodel.
Glen Ellyn Code Sec. 4-1-4, fee and deposit schedule (Municode)Village Code Sec. 4-1-11 makes it unlawful for a contractor to do permitted work without a certificate of insurance or professional license on file. Contractor registration is done in LAMA: the firm creates an account, picks its trade types and uploads a certificate naming the Village of Glen Ellyn, 535 Duane Street, as certificate holder and additional insured. A property owner working on their own home is exempt from the insurance rule unless also acting as a general contractor.

Applications go through the village’s LAMA online permit system, where you upload plans, equipment information and other documents as PDFs and sign electronically with the owner’s authorization. The Building Division page doesn’t name wood stoves, so call 630-469-5000 or ask Community Development which permit type and plan detail your stove or insert needs.
The village’s review sheet says interior remodeling on a landmarked home needs no Historic Preservation Commission review. A new roof that is not in kind, an addition, or street-visible changes to windows or doors do. A new exterior chimney or roof penetration on a landmark should be checked with Community Development first.
The fee schedule lists fireplaces under ‘Other’ miscellaneous permits at 100, and residential remodeling at 1.25% of construction cost with a $500 minimum. The village did not say which line applies to a wood stove or insert, so ask the Building Division before you sign a quote.
