Inside village limits, permits come from the Community Development Department’s Building Division on the second floor of Village Hall, 50 S. Emerson St., and can be filed through the village’s online portal. Mount Prospect adopted the 2021 International Residential and Mechanical codes on February 15, 2022, with local amendments. Village code makes it unlawful to change heating piping or alter a building before getting a permit. Its pages do not name wood stoves, so email permit@mountprospect.org or call 847-870-5675 to confirm the permit type. Inspections are booked at the same number 24 to 48 hours ahead.
Village of Mount Prospect: Building InspectionsCook County’s Environmental Control Ordinance applies everywhere in the county except Chicago, so it covers Mount Prospect. Its open-burning section exempts burning fuel in domestic fireplaces, and its equipment registration permit exempts domestic heating plants: stoves serving a house, a duplex, or a building with fewer than three apartments. Owners in larger condo or apartment buildings should check with the county before installing.
Cook County Code Ch. 30, Art. III (Air) (Municode)Mount Prospect requires a contractor’s license for general contractors, HVAC firms and several other trades, applied for through the online portal. A company is treated as a general contractor when it is the only contractor on a job or oversees several trades. The village lists the fee at $200, and licenses run one year from issue. Ask your installer for its current Mount Prospect license before the permit is filed.
Village of Mount Prospect: Licenses and PermitsVillage code says building permits are issued on the understanding that work starts within 60 days and is completed within one year. A permit expires if work does not start in time or stops for 30 days, and the fee and bond are forfeited, though the director may reinstate it for good cause with an added fee. Line up the stove, liner and installer before you apply.
Mount Prospect Village Code 21.203 (American Legal)Since April 1, 2018, Mount Prospect has charged most residential permits by flat tier rather than project value. The table puts chimney repair, HVAC, boiler and electrical work at $200 total with $100 of that refundable, and says the fee covers plan review and initial inspections. Mechanical equipment installation permits elsewhere in the code run 1% of cost with a $75 minimum; ask which applies to your stove.

The village says fireplace, heating and ventilation work may require a building permit, and code bars changing heating systems or altering a building without one. Its pages do not name wood stoves, so ask the Building Division at 847-870-5675 or permit@mountprospect.org which permit type applies.
Village code sets flat residential fees. Chimney repair, HVAC and boiler permits are $200 total, of which $100 is a refundable bond, and the fee covers plan review and initial inspections. A new stove may be classed differently, including as mechanical equipment at 1% of cost, so confirm before budgeting.
Not for a house. Cook County’s air ordinance, which covers suburban Cook County, exempts domestic heating plants such as stoves in single-family homes, duplexes and buildings with fewer than three apartments from its equipment registration permit, and its open-burning rules exempt domestic fireplaces.
