Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Columbus.

File the joint HVAC permit for fireplaces and wood stoves.

Inside Columbus, building permits and inspections are handled by the Bartholomew County Department of Technical Code Enforcement, which serves both the city and the county from 440 Third Street, Suite 302. The city’s own Development & Building Services page sends home remodeling projects there first. The department’s HVAC permit application is titled ‘HVAC (Including Fireplaces & Wood Stoves)’ and lets the applicant tick Wood Stove System or Fireplace System, with installation, replacement or alteration as the type of work. It asks for the contractor responsible and a contractor ID if the company is listed with the department. Call (812) 379-1535 to confirm the fee and which inspections your stove, insert or liner needs.

The historic overlay is informational, not a review.

Columbus is known for its architecture, but the joint Columbus and Bartholomew County zoning ordinance’s Historic Resource overlay (HR-OL) is not a design-review district. It covers the Sand Creek Township Rural Historic District and properties shown on the zoning map, encourages owners to protect historic character, and says it must not be read as imposing any additional development restrictions on private property. A new flue or chimney on a mapped property still needs the normal permit. Ask the Planning Department at (812) 376-2550 whether any other review covers your address.

Doing it yourself? File the owner sign-off.

The code office’s Owner Occupant Sign-Off lets an owner who lives in the home take responsibility for mechanical (heat and air) work under the Indiana Mechanical Code, Indiana Residential Code and local codes. You attest that you will do the work yourself and not pay anyone for it. If you later hire help, you must tell the department and have that person file their own paperwork and sign-off. Requesting an inspection states that the work is ready for it.

Book inspections a day ahead.

The Department of Technical Code Enforcement requires 24-hour advance scheduling for all inspections, by phone at (812) 379-1535, until 4:30 p.m. the day before. Its inspection list includes code 150, Fireplace / Flues, and code 499, Final Mechanical. All fees and fines must be paid before a final inspection is scheduled, so settle the permit account before the stove is ready to sign off.

Small jobs still cross the $300 line.

Both the Building Code of Bartholomew County and the Building Code of the City of Columbus say a permit must be obtained before construction, alteration or repair of a building costing more than $300, using the department’s forms. A stove, its hearth pad and a chimney or liner will almost always pass that figure. A hired installer also signs the Mechanical Contractor Sign-Off, promising to install appliances and venting to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Columbus wood stove installation FAQs.

Who issues a wood stove permit in Columbus, Indiana?

The Bartholomew County Department of Technical Code Enforcement handles building permits and inspections for both Columbus and the county. Its HVAC permit application covers fireplaces and wood stoves and has a Wood Stove System checkbox. The office is at 440 Third Street, Suite 302, and the number is (812) 379-1535.

Is the process different outside Columbus city limits?

The permit office is the same. The department enforces both the Building Code of Bartholomew County and the Building Code of the City of Columbus, and both require a permit for work costing more than $300. Outside the city, the department also investigates zoning violations and nuisance complaints, so rural addresses deal with the same office for more of the process.

Does Columbus’s historic overlay limit chimney work?

The joint zoning ordinance’s Historic Resource overlay encourages owners to protect historic character but says it imposes no additional development restrictions on private property, so it is not a design-review district. The building permit and inspections still apply. Ask the Planning Department whether any other review covers your address before changing a visible chimney.
