Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Zionsville.

Ask Zionsville Planning & Building about an Improvement Location Permit.

Inside town limits, Zionsville’s Planning & Building Department at Town Hall, 1100 W. Oak Street, reviews Improvement Location Permits (the town’s building permit) and acts as Building Commissioner. The residential application for additions and remodels cites the 2020 Indiana Residential Code, covering all crafts. Applications are emailed to department staff or dropped off at the front desk, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the town says residential review can take up to five business days. A town permit does not replace HOA approval, and permits are valid for one year. The forms do not name wood stoves, so call (317) 873-8247 to confirm what a stove, insert or liner needs.

Zionsville Permit Applications & Forms

Outdoor fires: clean wood, daylight, in a container.

Zionsville’s open-burning rules, drawn from 326 IAC Article 4 and town code Chapter 94, allow fires on a single-unit residential property only in daylight, in a vented non-combustible container with a mesh cover, burning only clean wood and paper. Leaves are banned, and no burning is allowed in high winds, temperature inversions or air stagnation. The Fire Marshal needs 24 hours’ notice for a recreational fire over 125 cubic feet. These rules cover outdoor fires, not an indoor stove.

Get the permit before the stove goes in.

Zionsville’s fee schedule (effective September 4, 2024) says that if work requiring an Improvement Location Permit has started in violation of the zoning code, the permit fee is five times the normal amount, up to $5,000 plus the normal fee. Working past a required inspection on a residential project that isn’t a new home carries a $150 late fee, and the missed inspection must be done before work resumes.

Book inspections by email, the day before.

Zionsville’s Planning & Building Department moved to email inspection requests on January 1, 2023. Requests go to inspectionrequest@zionsville-in.gov by 3 p.m. the day before the inspection, and staff set the time, which you can call to get on the day. Questions go to (317) 873-1576, not the inspection inbox. The department issues certificates of occupancy when a permitted project is finished.

Zionsville Inspections

Work hours depend on the district.

Zionsville’s permit page sets construction-noise hours by district. In the urban district, work runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday, with no Sunday work, enforced by Zionsville Police. In the rural district, it is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, enforced by the Boone County Sheriff’s Department. Ask your installer to schedule chimney and roof work inside those hours.

What to ask a Zionsville installer.

  1. Will you apply for the Zionsville Improvement Location Permit before work starts, so the five-times late fee doesn’t apply?
  2. Who will email the inspection requests to the town, and which inspections will this stove or insert need?
  3. Does my HOA need to approve the chimney or vent work as well as the town?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?
