Its Lawrence page says it carries fireplace inserts and stoves, offers wood-burning fireplaces, has a certified installation team and does chimney sweeping and inspection; it features a Quadra-Fire wood stove. The page mentions a Lawrence showroom, but the only address shown is in Riverside, Missouri. Ask where the crew is based and whether it holds a Lawrence trade license.

Inside Lawrence city limits, the Building Safety Division of Planning & Development Services issues permits. The city says a building permit must be obtained for nearly all new construction, additions, remodeling or repair work on one- and two-family homes before work starts, and it offers an Owner-Occupant Form for homeowners doing their own work. Its permit page lists the 2018 International Code Council codes, effective July 1, 2019. It does not name wood stoves or inserts, so ask which permit covers a stove, insert or new chimney. Homes outside city limits in Douglas County, or in Eudora or Baldwin City, go to those offices instead.
City of Lawrence: 1 & 2 Family Dwelling Building PermitsLawrence applies design review to every property on the Lawrence Register of Historic Places and to properties within 250 feet of a registered landmark or historic district. Any exterior construction, alteration or removal that needs a city building permit is reviewed. The Historic Resources Administrator decides whether a project is minor, such as like-for-like repair, or major, such as a change in appearance, which goes to the Historic Resources Commission. A new chimney, exterior flue or roof cap is a change in appearance to raise before applying.
City of Lawrence: Historic ResourcesLawrence Code Chapter V requires Class E trade licenses for mechanical, plumbing, electrical and fireplace work. The Class E Mechanical Fireplace Contractor license covers installing and servicing factory-built fireplace systems only, while the Class E Mechanical license covers heating and ventilation systems. A master fireplace tradesperson may qualify with a current wood and gas fireplace certification from the National Fireplace Institute. Ask the installer which license and certification cover a wood stove or insert.
Code of the City of Lawrence, Chapter V (Building and Construction)Lawrence’s trade-licensing article says a license is not required for work performed by the owner-occupant of a single-family residence. The owner agrees to get all required permits, follow all codes, request inspections at the proper intervals and make any corrections. The exemption does not cover rentals or other property types, so landlords installing a stove need a licensed contractor.
Code of the City of Lawrence, Chapter V, Article 17The city says it licenses building and trade contractors, and that contractors in the mechanical, electrical, plumbing or fireplace trades must have employees certified at the master or journeyman level. The city says licensing also makes sure contractors carry insurance and workers’ compensation. Confirm the company’s Lawrence license before any deposit.

Not if you are the owner-occupant of a single-family home doing the work yourself; Lawrence’s code exempts that case if you pull permits and pass inspections. Anyone hired must be licensed. The city licenses fireplace work as its own trade, and its Class E Mechanical Fireplace license covers factory-built fireplace systems.
We found no Lawrence or Douglas County rule limiting indoor wood stoves on poor air-quality days, and Kansas has no statewide indoor stove rule. Local burn limits we found apply to outdoor fires. Burn only dry, seasoned wood and check with the city if that changes.
It can. Lawrence reviews exterior work needing a city permit on Lawrence Register properties and within 250 feet of a registered landmark or district. An indoor stove alone may raise no issue, but a new chimney, exterior flue or roof penetration changes the exterior. Ask the Historic Resources Administrator first.
