Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Bridgewater.

Apply online to the Building Department on Central Square.

In Bridgewater, permits come from the Building Department in the Municipal Office Building, 66 Central Square (508-697-0904). East and West Bridgewater are separate towns with their own offices. Bridgewater uses the PermitEyes online system, and contractors and homeowners must apply there; paper applications are accepted but carry an extra $50 administrative fee. Permits must be paid in full and are mailed to the address on the application unless you arrange pickup. A permit card must be in hand before any work begins. Ask which inspections the stove and chimney need before the first fire.

Near the common, a new chimney needs approval.

Bridgewater’s local historic district, set up in 1986, runs around the Central Square common, including properties on both sides of the square, the Academy building and 9 and 19 Summer Street. The commission’s rules say any change visible from a public street needs its approval, and list adding, altering or removing chimneys. Interior work and changes not visible from a public way are exempt, so a stove vented through an existing chimney may need no review; a new metal chimney on a street-facing roof would.

What the stove permit costs.

Bridgewater’s residential building permit fee schedule lists a stove permit at $75, a duplicate permit card at $30 and starting work without a permit at triple the permit fee. Paper applications add a $50 administrative fee. The schedule’s own notes mention a doubled fee and a $50 re-inspection while its table lists triple and $100, so confirm the current amounts with the department.

One flue per stove, and an inspection first.

Massachusetts fire safety guidance says a building permit is needed before installing a wood, pellet or coal stove and that the local building inspector must inspect it before use. A solid fuel stove must not share a flue with another solid fuel, oil or gas appliance. In a Bridgewater house where the furnace already uses the only flue, plan on a new liner or chimney.

  1. Will you file the $75 Bridgewater stove permit on PermitEyes, and will the permit card be in hand before you start?
  2. If my house is in the Central Square historic district, can the flue run through the existing chimney so no new chimney shows from the street?
  3. Does my furnace or water heater already use the flue you plan to use?

Bridgewater wood stove installation FAQs.

What does a stove permit cost in Bridgewater?

The town’s residential fee schedule lists a stove permit at $75. Applications go through PermitEyes; paper applications add a $50 administrative fee. Starting work before the permit card is in hand can bring a triple permit fee, so wait for the card. East and West Bridgewater are separate towns with their own fee schedules.

Does the historic district affect a wood stove?

Only if the work shows from a public street. Bridgewater’s historic district around the Central Square common requires commission approval for visible changes, and its rules list adding or altering chimneys. Interior work is exempt. If you live near the common, using an existing chimney avoids a review; a new exterior chimney would need approval first.

How cold does it get here?

The Bridgewater weather station, under 2 miles from the town center, averages 27.4°F in January under 1991–2020 normals. That is cold enough to make outage heat worth planning for. A stove can keep one or two rooms usable without power, but it is not whole-home heat, and the inspector must see it before the first fire.
