Inside Brockton, permits come from the Building Department at City Hall, 45 School Street, 3rd Floor (508-580-7150). The department says it issues all online permits for residential and commercial construction and conducts electrical, plumbing, HVAC and building inspections. Its CitizenServe portal lists a building permit for one- or two-family dwellings but no wood stove or solid-fuel permit, so ask which permit covers your appliance, liner or chimney. Massachusetts fire-safety guidance says a building permit is needed before installing a wood stove and the local building inspector must inspect it before use. Stoughton, Easton, Avon and Abington have their own building departments.
Brockton Building DepartmentThe Massachusetts Department of Fire Services says the local building inspector must inspect a new wood, pellet or coal stove before it is used. It also says a solid-fuel appliance must not share a flue with another solid-fuel, oil or gas appliance, and that a qualified mason should inspect the chimney first. If your house has one masonry chimney already serving the boiler or furnace, confirm the stove will get its own flue or liner.

Brockton Code of Ordinances, Chapter 4 (Municode)Brockton’s permitting handbook (last modified 2019) says a building permit requires sign-offs from Engineering, Water, Sewer, Highway, the Fire Department, the Traffic Commission and the Conservation Commission. It is written for development projects, and a simple stove job may not need every step. Ask the Building Department which sign-offs apply and build that time into your schedule.

Not as a separate item. The Building Department’s CitizenServe portal lists building, gas, electrical, plumbing and other permits, but no wood stove type. State fire-safety guidance says a building permit and a local inspection are required, so call 508-580-7150 and ask which application to use.
Massachusetts fire-safety guidance says a solid-fuel appliance must not share a common flue with a flue used by another solid-fuel, oil or gas appliance. If your only chimney already serves the heating system, expect a separate liner in another flue or a new factory-built chimney, and ask the installer to price that.
