Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Fall River.

Building Inspectors issue the permit at Government Center.

Inside Fall River, building permits come from the Building Inspectors in Inspectional Services, One Government Center, Room 524 (508-324-2500, buildings@fallriverma.gov). The city says you need a building permit to repair, renovate or demolish any building or structure, and that only the owner living in an owner-occupied one- or two-family home can use the homeowner’s exemption; other buildings need a Massachusetts licensed contractor. The city says it takes cash or check. It publishes no wood stove permit type, so ask which permit covers your stove and chimney. Somerset, Swansea, Westport and Freetown issue their own permits.

Fall River: Why do I need a building permit?

Highlands: stove pipes are part of the review.

Fall River’s Historic District Commission has regulatory power over 47 properties in the Highland Historical District. Its filing procedures say applications must show items such as heat pumps, electrical entries, meters and stove pipes on scale drawings, that a building permit cannot be issued until a certificate is granted, and that the Commission decides within 60 days. If your house is in the Highlands, plan a visible stove pipe or chimney with the Commission before ordering parts.

Fall River Local Historic District filing procedures (PDF, 2026)

No permit in the district without a certificate.

Fall River Code § 38-36 says that in a local historic district no building permit or demolition permit may issue until the Historical Commission grants a certificate of appropriateness, non-applicability or hardship. Ordinary repair that does not change design, material or appearance is excluded under § 38-39, and § 38-41 allows a daily fine of up to $300 per offense. A new exterior chimney or through-wall vent is not ordinary repair.

Fall River Code Ch. 38, Art. II (eCode360)

No first fire until the inspector signs off.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services says you need a building permit before installing a wood, pellet or coal stove and that the local building inspector must inspect it before it is used. It also says a solid-fuel appliance must not share a flue with another solid-fuel, oil or gas appliance. If your only chimney already vents a boiler or furnace, ask whether the stove needs its own liner or a new chimney.

What to ask a Fall River installer.

  1. Is my house one of the Highlands historic district properties, and will you prepare drawings that show the stove pipe for the Historical Commission?
  2. Will the stove get its own flue, separate from the chimney my boiler uses?
  3. Who pulls the Fall River building permit, and who books the inspection before the first fire?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Answers before you request a quote

Fall River wood stove installation FAQs.

Does the Highlands district review a wood stove?

It reviews exterior changes. Fall River’s filing procedures list stove pipes among items applicants must show on drawings, and the ordinance bars a building permit in the district until a certificate is issued. A stove vented through an existing interior chimney may need little review; a new exterior pipe likely needs a certificate.

Can I pull the Fall River permit myself?

Only if you own and live in a one- or two-family home. Fall River says only the listed owner of an owner-occupied one- or two-family dwelling can use the homeowner’s exemption; any other building needs a Massachusetts licensed contractor to pull the permit. The city says it takes cash or check.

Are there installers that name Fall River?

The Fireplace Showcase in Seekonk and Hearthside Fireplace & Patio, with a Westport showroom, both name Fall River on their own sites. Britt’s Chimney & Masonry names Bristol County from Weymouth. None is based in the city, so confirm coverage, lead time and permit handling.
