Its New Bedford page offers gas, electric and wood-burning fireplace installation in and around the city, and its inserts page describes EPA-compliant wood inserts for masonry fireplaces. The page’s wood-burning ‘stove’ section describes a zero-clearance fireplace, not a freestanding stove. The showroom is in Abington, so confirm travel and whether exterior venting needs historic review.

Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in New Bedford.

Permits come from the Department of Inspectional Services.

Inside New Bedford, permits come from the Department of Inspectional Services at City Hall, 133 William Street. The city’s permitting guide (dated 2017) says the department issues permits under the State Building Code for construction, alteration, repair and installation of mechanical equipment, and lists Room 308 and 508-979-1540. Its homeowner exemption form lets an owner-occupant of a one- or two-family home take out the building permit and accept responsibility for code compliance. No wood stove permit type is published, so ask which permit covers your stove, liner or chimney. Dartmouth, Fairhaven and Acushnet issue their own permits.

Bedford Landing: exterior changes need approval first.

New Bedford has one local historic district, the Bedford-Landing Waterfront Historic District, administered by the Historical Commission under state law and city ordinance. The Commission’s instructions say it must review and approve all changes to the exterior of a property within the district, and a building permit may be issued only after its certificate. Appropriateness and hardship applications need a public hearing, heard within 45 days of filing. A new chimney or wall vent there needs this step.

Older houses: some changes count as demolition.

New Bedford’s demolition delay ordinance applies to buildings 75 or more years old, and to buildings of unknown age. Besides full demolition, it treats some partial work as demolition, including altering a building’s key character-defining features so it could no longer be listed on the National Register. If your plan removes or rebuilds a prominent original chimney on an older house, ask Inspectional Services whether a demolition permit and Historical Commission review apply.

New Bedford Code, Ch. 2, Art. XI (Municode)

No first fire until the inspector signs off.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services says a building permit is needed before installing a wood stove and the local building inspector must inspect it before it is used. It adds that a solid-fuel appliance must not share a flue with another solid-fuel, oil or gas appliance. In a multi-family house where one chimney already vents the boilers, expect a separate liner or a new chimney.

What to ask a New Bedford installer.

  1. Is my house inside the Bedford-Landing Waterfront Historic District, and does the chimney or vent need a Historical Commission certificate?
  2. Does the plan remove or rebuild an original chimney, and could that trigger New Bedford’s demolition review?
  3. Will the stove get its own flue, separate from the boiler chimney?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

Answers before you request a quote

New Bedford wood stove installation FAQs.

Does the historic district affect a wood stove?

Only if your property is inside the Bedford-Landing Waterfront Historic District and the work changes the exterior. The Historical Commission reviews all exterior changes there, so a new metal chimney, roof cap or wall vent needs its certificate before a building permit. Call the Preservation Planner in the Planning Department to check your address.

Can taking out an old chimney count as demolition?

Possibly. New Bedford’s demolition ordinance covers buildings 75 or more years old and treats altering key character-defining features as a form of demolition. Most stove jobs will not reach that bar, but if the plan removes a prominent original chimney, ask Inspectional Services before work starts.

Are there installers based in New Bedford?
