Inside Somerville, building permits come from the Inspectional Services Department’s Building Division at 1 Franey Road (617-625-6600 ext. 5600). ISD says a permit is required for all interior and exterior work except painting, tiling and flooring, and applications go through CitizenServe. A homeowner who lives in a one- or two-family house can apply; for a three-family or larger building, a licensed contractor must apply. No ISD page names wood stoves, so ask which permits cover the stove, liner and chimney, or book a preliminary meeting with an inspector. State fire-safety guidance says the local inspector must inspect a wood stove before use.
Somerville ISD Building DivisionThe Somerville Fire Department says outdoor fireplaces, fire pits and chimineas are prohibited in the city, and that wood, charcoal and other grills are not allowed on porches, balconies, fire escapes or roofs. It explains that Somerville is densely populated, with older wood-frame homes built close together. The notice does not cover indoor stoves, but the same closeness matters for chimney height, spark risk and smoke reaching neighbours’ windows. Ask your installer how the flue will clear nearby buildings.
Somerville Fire Department: grilling and outdoor firesSomerville’s Historic Preservation Commission says any work on a Local Historic District property requires some type of certificate from the Commission or its staff. Applications go through CitizenServe as a Historic Permit, emailed or paper applications are no longer accepted, and staff may add legal ad fees to the case. A Certificate of Non-Applicability covers work not visible from a public way or park. The city posts a list of historic district properties by address.
Somerville HPC submittal requirements (PDF)The Commission’s design guidelines ask that antennae, air conditioners, solar collectors and other mechanical units go at the rear of the property or on roof areas not visible from a public way. They also ask owners to keep the roof shape and its distinctive features. The guidelines date from 2006, so ask preservation staff whether a new metal flue or cap is treated as a mechanical unit before you pick the chimney route.

Nothing found on the city’s pages bans indoor wood stoves, but multi-unit buildings add steps. In a three-family or larger, a licensed contractor must apply for the building permit. Condo documents or the other owners may control roofs and chimneys, and state guidance bars sharing a flue with another appliance. Renters need the owner’s written consent.
The Fire Department’s prohibition names outdoor fireplaces, fire pits and chimineas, and the city explains it by the density of closely built wood-frame homes. It does not address indoor stoves, which go through an ISD building permit and inspection. Ask ISD at 617-625-6600 ext. 5600 if you want a preliminary meeting with an inspector.
The Historic Preservation office posts a list of Local Historic District properties by address; the 2017 version includes many single-building districts across the city, not just clusters. If your property is listed, any work needs a certificate from the Commission or its staff, filed as a Historic Permit in CitizenServe. Questions go to historic@somervillema.gov.
