Inside Eastpointe, permits come from the Building Department in City Hall, 23200 Gratiot Avenue (586-445-3661, option 2; open Monday to Thursday), and are applied for online through BSA. The city’s mechanical permit application lists ‘Solid Fuel Equipment’ as a fee item and says mechanical work must not start until the permit is issued, must follow the State Mechanical Code, and must not be concealed until inspected. The permits page says a permit must be pulled before work begins or a penalty fee applies. Permits lapse if work doesn’t start, or inspections aren’t requested, within six months. Confirm the inspections your stove or insert needs.
City of Eastpointe: mechanical permit application (PDF, rev. 10/25)An April 2021 bulletin from Eastpointe’s fire marshal says city ordinance 1610.01, adopting the 2015 International Fire Code, restricts open fires on private property, including bonfires and yard waste. Hardwood logs may be burned only in a UL-listed outdoor fireplace of metal or masonry with a spark screen, at least 15 feet from buildings on a non-combustible surface, attended by an adult with an extinguisher or hose ready. Scrap wood, tree trimmings and leaves are banned. These rules cover outdoor fires, not an indoor stove.
Eastpointe Fire Marshal bulletin: open burning (2021, PDF)Eastpointe says a homeowner may pull a permit for their own house only if they live there; non-owner-occupied properties need a contractor to apply. The mechanical application’s homeowner affidavit certifies that you will install the work yourself in a home you occupy or are about to, follow the Michigan Mechanical Code, and not use it until the mechanical inspector approves it. If a contractor does the work, the contractor pulls the permit.
City of Eastpointe: permitsEastpointe’s Building Department registers and inspects all non-owner-occupied homes, with inspections every two years. Its rental page says the furnace or boiler must be inspected by a licensed contractor as part of registration. A landlord adding a wood stove should ask whether the rental inspector will look at it, and keep the permit and final inspection record for the rental file.

Yes, in effect. The city’s mechanical permit application, revised October 2025, has a ‘Solid Fuel Equipment’ line, along with an application fee and a final inspection fee. Permits are applied for online through BSA, and the Building Department at City Hall (586-445-3661, option 2) can confirm which inspections a stove or insert needs.
Only in a home you live in. Eastpointe says homeowners may pull permits only for the house they occupy; rentals and other non-owner-occupied homes need a contractor. The homeowner affidavit on the mechanical form commits you to follow the Michigan Mechanical Code and not use the stove until the inspector approves it.
It may. Eastpointe registers and inspects all non-owner-occupied homes every two years and requires the furnace or boiler to be inspected by a licensed contractor. A wood stove added to a rental should be permitted and inspected first, and keeping that record makes the rental inspection simpler.
