Its wood stoves and inserts page says it carries a full line of wood stoves and wood fireplace inserts, names Jøtul, Osburn, Napoleon and Timberwolf, and offers free wood stove and insert estimates; a customer quote on the page describes two inserts it installed. Holland is on its service-area list. Its site gives only a Hamilton ZIP code, so ask where it works from.

Inside Holland city limits, Community & Neighborhood Services at City Hall, 270 S River Avenue (616-355-1330, permits@cityofholland.com), handles all construction permits and inspections, whether your home is on the Ottawa or Allegan County side. Its January 2026 mechanical permit form says work may not start until a permit is issued and lists a $70 residential fireplace flat fee for new and existing fireplaces that includes only one inspection, plus $6 residential line items for ‘Fireplace / Wood Burner’, ‘Solid Fuel Equipment’ and ‘Chimney / Liner’. Work started before the permit is issued draws $100-per-day late fees, and permits expire after 180 days. Ask which lines your stove or insert falls under and how many inspections to expect.
City of Holland application for a mechanical permit (January 2026, PDF)Holland’s Certificate of Appropriateness review table, approved by the Historic District Commission on February 3, 2026, assigns installation of metal or PVC chimneys, removal of chimneys, changes to chimney caps and masonry repointing to full commission review. Installing a chimney liner that is not visible from outside needs no historic review, only a mechanical permit. Exterior vents and stacks go to staff review. If your home is in a local district, a stove that uses a lined existing chimney may avoid a commission meeting; a new metal chimney will not.
Holland Certificate of Appropriateness review responsibility (February 2026, PDF)Holland has four local historic districts: the Holland Historic District (1986), the Holland Historic District Addition (1994), the Washington Boulevard Historic District (2001) and Keppel’s Village Historic District (2010). The city says properties in them need a Certificate of Appropriateness for all work affecting the exterior. Applications reviewed by the commission cost $25, staff review is free, and applications submitted after work has begun are charged an extra $50 late fee.
City of Holland historic preservationHolland registers rental units and inspects them on a three- or six-year cycle. Its rental inspection guide says a licensed mechanical contractor must inspect the heating system, with a report from the past 12 months, that each room must have adequate heat and that portable heaters are not allowed. The city’s heating checklist includes the exterior chimney and cap and the interior of the chimney or flue liner. Landlords adding a stove should plan for those checks.
Holland rental inspection fee schedule and information brochure (PDF)Holland allows recreational fires in city limits under section 307 of the 2012 International Fire Code. Seasoned, untreated wood is the only fuel allowed; yard waste, garbage and treated materials are banned. A fire in an approved container must be at least 15 feet from structures, 25 feet without one, no more than 3 feet across, and constantly attended. Those are outdoor rules; they do not cover an indoor stove.

Holland’s mechanical permit packet includes a homeowner’s affidavit. You must own the property, live in it, and have it classified as a single-family home, and you agree to do all the work yourself and request inspections. The inspector can cancel the permit and require a licensed contractor if you do not show competence. Homes owned by an LLC or other entity, or not occupied by the owner, need a licensed contractor.
Not for the stove permit. The 2024 millage table shows both counties inside Holland, but the city says all construction permits and inspections, including mechanical work, go through Community & Neighborhood Services at City Hall. Its code page lists the 2015 Michigan Residential Code and the 2021 Michigan Mechanical Code. Township addresses outside city limits use their own permit offices.
Nothing on the city’s historic pages bars a stove, but the venting matters. Under the February 2026 review table, a liner not visible from outside needs no historic review, while a new metal or PVC chimney, chimney removal or cap changes go to the full Historic District Commission, which generally meets the first Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. Talk to the preservation planner before you buy.
