Wood stove permits in Madison Heights.

Get a mechanical permit from the Building Division.

Inside Madison Heights, permits come from the Community Development Department’s Building Division at City Hall, 300 W. Thirteen Mile Road (248-583-0831), which enforces the state mechanical code. The mechanical permit application, revised June 2025, charges a non-refundable $30 application fee and $75 per inspection, with at least one inspection on every permit. Its fee schedule says pre-fab fireplaces need at least one inspection per dwelling unit and may also need a gas line inspection, and that an investigative fee equal to the permit fee applies if work began before the permit was issued. The form doesn’t name wood stoves, so confirm with the Building Division how a stove or insert is inspected.

Homeowner permit? No renting or selling for a year.

Madison Heights’ homeowner affidavit, signed before a notary, says the home is or will be your principal residence, that no part of it will be rented for one year, and that a sale isn’t contemplated within a year of completion. You agree to do the work yourself, keep it exposed until approved and correct deficiencies promptly. If you hire a contractor for mechanical work, that contractor must get its own permit. Owners planning to rent or sell soon should hire a contractor instead.

Renting it out? The heating plant gets checked.

Madison Heights licenses landlords for four years at a time. Its July 2025 checklist says heating plant inspections must be done by a licensed contractor, on the city’s form, within 90 days of the license expiration date, and that the original form must be submitted. City inspections run weekday mornings only, from 9 a.m. to noon. A landlord adding a wood stove should ask whether the heating inspection will cover it and keep the permit record.

Hire licensed, city-registered contractors.

The city’s permits page says a qualified homeowner living in the house may pull permits for work they do themselves, but anyone hired must be licensed by the State of Michigan and registered with the city before starting work; the city verifies licenses and insurance. If a problem appears before final approval, staff will require the contractor to correct it, and after final approval the department can supply inspection reports for a state complaint.

What to ask a Madison Heights installer.

  1. Are you licensed by the state and registered with Madison Heights, and will you pull your own mechanical permit before starting?
  2. How many $75 inspections do you expect the city to require for this stove or insert, and are they in your quote?
  3. Will you run a liner sized to the stove and leave paperwork a licensed heating inspector can use at my next landlord renewal?

Answers before you request a quote

Madison Heights wood stove installation FAQs.

How are mechanical permits priced in Madison Heights?

By inspection. The June 2025 application charges a $30 application fee plus $75 for each inspection, and every permit needs at least one. Pre-fab fireplaces need at least one inspection per dwelling unit and may need a gas line inspection too. Failed inspections are reinspected at $90, and starting before the permit adds an investigative fee.

Can I pull a homeowner permit and install a stove myself?

Only for a home you will live in. The notarized affidavit says the home won’t be rented for one year or contemplated for sale within a year of completion. You must do the work yourself, keep it exposed until approved, and any mechanical contractor you hire must pull its own permit.

I’m a landlord. Does a new stove affect my license?

It can. Madison Heights landlord licenses run four years, and the checklist requires a licensed contractor to inspect the heating plant on the city’s form within 90 days of expiration. Have the stove permitted and finaled first, and ask whether the heating inspection should note it.
