Inside Novi, the Community Development Department’s Building Division at 45175 Ten Mile Road administers the mechanical code and issues heating permits (248-347-0415). Its Mechanical (Heating) Permit Application, revised July 1, 2026, lists “Solid Fuel Equipment (includes chimney)” at $35, a flue/vent damper/chimney liner at $6 and a $60 final inspection covering rough and final. Work may not start until the permit is issued. Plans are not required for one- and two-family homes with total heating input of 375,000 BTU or less. Homeowners may apply for their own home. Some addresses near Novi belong to Wixom, Northville or Commerce Township, so confirm the property is inside the city.
Novi Mechanical (Heating) Permit Application (rev. 7.1.2026, PDF)Novi’s Fire Department allows small recreational fires only in a metal outdoor fireplace or other non-combustible container, using seasoned dried firewood, at least 50 feet from the house, deck, fences and other structures, and always attended. Trash and yard waste may never be burned, and any fire that draws a complaint must be put out. These rules cover outdoor fires, not an indoor stove, but the same habit of burning only dry firewood keeps a stove’s chimney cleaner.
City of Novi Fire: Rules for Open BurningNovi’s Homeowner Permit Policy form (dated 1-2004) says a homeowner who takes out the permit for their own single-family home accepts all liability for code compliance, must correct violations even if a contractor did the work, and cannot look to the city for help with a claim against an unlicensed contractor they hired. The heating application’s affidavit adds that the homeowner must arrange inspections and not cover or use the work before approval.
Novi Homeowner Permit Policy (PDF)Novi says contractors and homeowners schedule building, electrical, plumbing and heating inspections through its Online Inspection Portal, which replaced the 24-hour phone line. A permit number is required, and requests for the next business day must be made by 3:30 p.m. Contractors must register before first use; residents without internet access can call Community Development at 248-347-0415.

A heating (mechanical) permit from the Building Division. Novi’s application revised July 1, 2026 lists “Solid Fuel Equipment (includes chimney)” at $35, a chimney liner at $6, a $35 non-refundable application fee and a $60 final inspection. Work may not start before the permit is issued. Confirm current fees at 248-347-0415.
Novi lets homeowners take out permits for their own home, but its Homeowner Permit Policy says the permit holder carries all liability for code compliance and must correct violations even if a contractor did the work. If you hire an installer, having the licensed contractor apply puts that responsibility on them.
The application says a permit is closed if no inspection is requested and conducted within 180 days of issue or of the last inspection. Closed permits cannot be refunded, and reopening one costs $50. Plan to book the final inspection through the online portal soon after the stove is installed.
