Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Portage.

Portage’s Building Division issues mechanical permits.

Portage runs its own Building Division within the Department of Community Development, separate from the City of Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo County, and it issues building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits through BS&A Online. Its Mechanical Permit Information sheet says a mechanical permit is needed to install, alter, repair or replace a system governed by the mechanical code, and work may not start until the permit is issued. Only a state-licensed mechanical contractor, or a homeowner working on the single-family home they occupy, can obtain one. The pages do not name wood stoves, so confirm with the permit coordinator at (269) 329-4466.

City of Portage: Building & Permits

Listed historic homes need approval before exterior work.

Portage’s Historic District Commission reviews exterior changes to properties in the Portage Historic District, under the state Local Historic Districts Act and Chapter 38 of the city code. The district is a list of individual sites, many of them 19th-century homes on roads such as Angling, Oakland, Milham and Westnedge. If your home is one of them, a new chimney, chase, flue or cap needs commission approval before a building permit. The commission meets on the first Wednesday of each month.

Check the historic sites map first.

Portage’s Historic District sites map (Rev. 10/08) lists about 40 properties, from an 1829 house on South Sprinkle Road to schoolhouses and cemeteries. The Certificate of Appropriateness application (revised 2021) says any construction, alteration or repair affecting the exterior needs HDC permission, with plans, drawings and photos. After approval city staff issue a Certificate of Approval, and the owner then contacts Community Development about the building permit.

Who may pull the mechanical permit.

Portage’s Mechanical Permit Information sheet says permits go only to a State of Michigan licensed mechanical contractor, or to a homeowner doing mechanical work in a single-family home and outbuildings they own and occupy, or will occupy. Portable heating appliances are exempt, but a vented stove or insert is not portable. The application can be printed and brought or mailed with fees to Community Development, or filed online.

Backyard fires need an inspected pit.

Under Section 34-94 of the Portage code, recreational fires must be in an approved pit no wider than three feet, lined with brick or rock, 25 feet from all structures, and 25 feet from property lines unless a neighbour agrees in writing. Permits are issued after a $20 site inspection and last two years; renewal is $5. Fires are banned in winds of 10 mph or more and must be out by midnight.

What to ask a Portage installer.

  1. Do you hold a Michigan mechanical contractor licence, and will you file the Portage mechanical permit through BS&A Online?
  2. Is my house on Portage’s historic sites list, and if so will you supply drawings for a Historic District Commission review before the permit?
  3. If I buy the stove from a Portage showroom, who installs it, and does the installer provide the liner and chimney parts?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

Answers before you request a quote

Portage wood stove installation FAQs.

Does Portage or Kalamazoo issue my stove permit?

If your address is inside the City of Portage, the city’s own Building Division issues the permit, not the City of Kalamazoo or Kalamazoo County. Mechanical permits are filed through BS&A Online or on paper with Community Development at 7900 South Westnedge Avenue. Call the permit coordinator at (269) 329-4466 to confirm what a stove or insert needs.

Is my Portage home in the historic district?

Portage’s historic district is a list of individual properties, not a neighbourhood. The sites map (Rev. 10/08) shows about 40 homes, schoolhouses, cemeteries and a grain elevator, most built before 1930. If yours is listed, exterior work such as a new chimney or flue needs Historic District Commission approval before a building permit. Ask Community Development to confirm the current list.

Can I install a wood stove myself in Portage?

Yes, if you own and live in the single-family home. Portage says mechanical permits go only to state-licensed mechanical contractors or to homeowners doing the work in their own occupied home. You still need the permit before work starts and must pass inspection. A landlord would need a licensed contractor.
