Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Roseville.

Get a mechanical permit from the Roseville Building Department.

Inside Roseville, the Building Department at City Hall, 29777 Gratiot Avenue (586-445-5450), issues mechanical permits. Its mechanical application, dated 7/2023, lists ‘Prefab Wood Fireplace w/chimney’ at $30, chimneys priced by flue size ($15 for 8 inches or less), and ‘Stacks, Liners or B-vents’ at $20, plus a $30 residential application fee and a $90 minimum permit fee. It has no line naming a wood stove or insert, so ask the department which items your stove, liner and chimney fall under. Inspections can be booked online through BS&A or by phone, and most cannot be scheduled for the next business day.

Outdoor fires need a hose within five feet.

Roseville’s open burning handout from the Fire Department prohibits burning weeds, brush and garbage, and sets conditions for fires that are allowed: an adult at least 18 years old must attend at all times, a garden hose or other water source must be within five feet, and a fire pit, chiminea or outdoor fireplace may be no more than three feet across. Officers can order a fire put out after a complaint. These rules are for outdoor fires; an indoor stove goes through the mechanical permit.

Installers must register with the city each year.

Roseville’s Building Department says contractor registration is good for one year from the date of registration. Contractors email the registration form with a copy of their contractor’s license and driver’s license. The form quotes Michigan’s rule that anyone required to hold a residential builder or mechanical contractor license may not work on a residential building without one, with civil fines of $100 to $500. Ask your installer whether its Roseville registration is current.

Rentals need a city inspection and certificate.

Roseville’s Non-Owner Occupied Housing Ordinance requires landlords to register rental homes and pass an inspection before the city issues a Certificate of Compliance. The listed fee for a single-family home or duplex is $150, covering the initial inspection and first reinspection. With about a third of households renting, a landlord adding a stove should expect the unit to be looked at during that inspection and should keep the permit records.

What to ask a Roseville installer.

  1. Which lines on Roseville’s mechanical form will you use for my stove, and will the chimney be priced by its flue size?
  2. Is your contractor registration with the Roseville Building Department current for this year?
  3. Will you book the inspections through BS&A, allowing for the fact that next-day inspections usually aren’t available?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Roseville wood stove installation FAQs.

Is Roseville’s permit office the same as St. Clair Shores’ or Warren’s?

No. Roseville has its own Building Department at City Hall, 29777 Gratiot Avenue, with its own mechanical form and fees. Its form has no wood stove line, unlike St. Clair Shores, and uses a $90 minimum permit fee. Check which city your address is in before applying.

Can I have a backyard fire pit in Roseville?

The Fire Department’s handout prohibits burning weeds, brush and garbage. Where a fire is allowed, an adult must attend it, a garden hose must be within five feet, and the pit, chiminea or outdoor fireplace may be no more than three feet across. Officers can order a fire put out after a complaint.

Why is the climate figure from Grosse Pointe Farms?

The January normal on this page, 24.0°F, comes from NOAA’s 1991–2020 station at Grosse Pointe Farms, about 7 miles south of Roseville near Lake St. Clair. A monthly average does not describe the coldest nights or how long a winter power outage might last.
