Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Taylor.

Get a mechanical permit from Building & Safety.

Inside Taylor, the Department of Building & Safety at the Municipal Building, 23555 Goddard Road, issues mechanical permits; applications are filed there and paid by cash, check or money order. The 2025–2026 application (revised 7/1/2025) lists a $50 non-refundable application fee, ‘Pre-Fab Fireplace (wood or gas) w/or without chimney’ at $53.50, chimney liners at $16, a $15 registration fee and a $75 residential minimum. Mechanical work may not start until the application is filed, and nothing may be concealed before inspection. The form has no wood stove line, so call 734-287-6550 to confirm how your stove is listed.

Selling later? Plan for the re-occupancy inspection.

Taylor requires a Certificate of Occupancy for any change of ownership, and certificates are not transferable. The Re-Occupancy Inspection application lists a $200 residential fee and says the inspection is valid for six months. The city’s inspection checklist was not found, so FireplaceLab could not confirm whether a stove is checked, but keeping the permit and final inspection record for your stove makes that step simpler.

Taylor Building Department FAQs

Doing it yourself? It must be your own home.

The homeowner affidavit on Taylor’s mechanical application certifies that you will do the work yourself in your own home, where you live or are about to live. Work may not be enclosed, covered up or put into operation until the mechanical inspector approves it, and you take responsibility for arranging the inspections.

Rentals are inspected every three years.

Taylor’s Rental Department says rental homes and apartments must be inspected every three years, and a change of ownership requires new inspections. Its FAQ says out-of-compliance rentals face civil infractions starting at $150 per day. If you add a wood stove to a rental, ask whether it is checked at that inspection.

Taylor Rental Department

Idle permits are cancelled, not refunded.

Taylor’s mechanical application says a permit is cancelled when no inspection is requested and conducted within six months of issue or of the last inspection, and that cancelled permits cannot be refunded or reinstated. Failed inspections are subject to reinspection fees, so schedule the final inspection once the stove is in.

Wood stove installation costs in Taylor.

U.S. planning ranges to prepare for a Taylor quote. They are national estimates, not measured Taylor averages or offers from listed businesses.

New installation, no chimney$5,500–$9,000+

What to ask a Taylor installer.

  1. Is your license registered with Taylor’s Building & Safety department, and will you list the stove and chimney liner on the mechanical permit?
  2. Will you meet the mechanical inspector for the final inspection so the permit isn’t cancelled after six months?
  3. Can you give me paperwork I can use later for Taylor’s Certificate of Occupancy inspection when I sell?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Answers before you request a quote

Taylor wood stove installation FAQs.

Does Taylor require a permit for a wood stove?

Taylor’s mechanical permit application covers heating equipment and lists ‘Pre-Fab Fireplace (wood or gas)’ and chimney liners as fee items, with a $50 application fee and $75 minimum. It has no wood stove line, so call Building & Safety at 734-287-6550 to confirm how a stove or insert is permitted.

Will a wood stove matter when I sell my Taylor home?

Taylor requires a Certificate of Occupancy for any change of ownership, based on a re-occupancy inspection ($200 residential, valid six months). FireplaceLab did not find the inspection checklist, so ask the Building Department whether stoves are checked, and keep your permit and final inspection records.

How does my installer register to pull permits in Taylor?

Taylor’s FAQ says contractors bring a driver’s license or state ID and their contractor’s license to the Building Department; no registration form is needed. The mechanical application adds a $15 registration fee. Homeowners doing their own work sign the affidavit on the application instead.
