Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Apple Valley.

Apple Valley Building Inspections issues the permit.

Inside Apple Valley, permits come from the Building Inspections Division of Public Works at the Municipal Center, 7100 147th Street W, not Dakota County. The city’s FAQ lists fireplaces, furnace replacement and HVAC/mechanical systems among work that usually needs a permit, and tells residents to call Building Inspections at 952-953-2588 and talk through plans with an inspector. All applications go through the online ePermits site; residential plan review takes 8 to 10 business days, and permits must be approved and paid in full before work starts. Ask which permit type covers your stove or insert and its chimney.

Apple Valley Building Inspections FAQ

Smoke complaints end a backyard fire.

Apple Valley’s fire regulations allow recreational fires at single-family homes if only clean, dry firewood is burned, the fire stays within 3 by 3 by 3 feet, it is 25 feet from the house, garage, shed, deck or fence and 15 feet from property lines, and winds are under 15 mph. Fire or police can stop any fire, and a smoke complaint means immediate extinguishment. The city issues no open-burning permits to residents for brush or yard waste. Indoor stoves are separate, but burn dry wood for the same reason.

Budget for the down payment and the chimney fee.

Apple Valley’s 2026 fee schedule, adopted November 25, 2025, takes a non-refundable down payment of 25% of the permit fee when you apply for a building, fire, mechanical or plumbing permit, and refunds only 66% of a permit fee. It lists residential chimney repair at a flat $163.19 and a new-construction fireplace at $155.89. Work without a permit carries an investigation fee of $87.41 an hour, capped at the permit fee.

The city works to the 2020 state codes.

Apple Valley’s Codes In Use page says the city follows the 2020 Minnesota State Building Codes, published by the Department of Labor and Industry, and notes the 2020 plumbing code took effect December 17, 2021. Its FAQ points to the same department for contractor licensing rules. Ask your installer which code edition and appliance listing the inspector will check, and keep the stove’s manual for the inspection.

What to ask a Apple Valley installer.

  1. Will you apply for the Apple Valley permit through ePermits, and is the 25% down payment included in your quote?
  2. Does my existing chimney need repair or relining first, and would that need Apple Valley’s separate chimney repair permit?
  3. Are you coming from Dakota County or across the metro, and does that change your schedule or travel charge?

Compare quotes on the same scope.
