Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Brooklyn Center.

Brooklyn Center Community Development issues the permit.

Inside Brooklyn Center, the Building Division of Community Development at 6301 Shingle Creek Parkway reviews plans and inspects building, plumbing and mechanical work for compliance with city ordinances and the state building and fire codes. Permits are filed online through the city’s iMS system or emailed to communitydevelopment@brooklyncentermn.gov, and the issued permit and inspection card must be posted at the job site. The mechanical permit form says a city-issued mechanical contractor license is required and lists gas fireplaces as a sub-type, while the building permit form lists a fireplace inspection. Neither names wood stoves, so call 763-569-3330 to confirm which permit your stove or insert needs.

No backyard fires on air-quality alert days.

Brooklyn Center’s recreational fire handout, issued under the state fire code and city ordinance, bans outdoor fires when the city or Minnesota DNR declares a burning ban or the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency declares an air quality alert. Pits must be 25 feet from buildings, fences and property lines, no wider than three feet, burn only clean dry wood, and be out by midnight. The rule covers outdoor fires; check alert days anyway if smoke from a stove would drift toward close neighbours.

Check your installer’s city license.

Brooklyn Center says no one may install, alter or repair a building heating or ventilating system, including incidental gas piping, without a city mechanical contractor license under Section 23-1500. The license runs May 1 to April 30, costs $60 a year, and needs proof of the $25,000 state bond, insurance, workers’ compensation and a Minnesota tax ID. The City Council approves each application at a regular meeting, so a new contractor may need a few weeks.

How the mechanical fee is figured.

Brooklyn Center’s mechanical permit application, revised February 2025, sets a $75 minimum: $75 for work up to $500, then $75 plus 2% of value over $500, and 1% over $50,000. It lists ‘Residential Boiler/Fireplace up to 4 units’ at $75 and adds a state surcharge, plus a 65% plan review fee when filed without a building permit. The form names gas fireplaces only, so ask staff how a wood stove or insert is priced.

Blower wiring goes to Sloth Inspections.

Brooklyn Center administers electrical permits through the city but uses Sloth Inspections, formerly Tokle Inspections, to inspect the work; call (763) 200-6334 or book online. If a stove or insert has a hard-wired blower, ask whether you need an electrical permit too. The city refunds 80% of fees, capped at $150 retained, only if a permit is cancelled before any work starts.

What to ask a Brooklyn Center installer.

  1. Do you hold a current Brooklyn Center mechanical contractor license, approved by the City Council, and will you pull the permit through iMS?
  2. Will my wood stove or insert be filed under the $75 residential fireplace line, and will the job need a separate fireplace inspection on a building permit?
  3. If the stove has a blower, will you get the electrical permit and book the Sloth Inspections visit?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

There is no reliable single savings figure for every Brooklyn Center home. Answers before you request a quote

Brooklyn Center wood stove installation FAQs.

Where do I get a stove permit in Brooklyn Center?

From Community Development at City Hall, 6301 Shingle Creek Parkway. Permits are filed online through the city’s iMS system or emailed, and you can pay by card over the phone. The mechanical form names gas fireplaces and the building form lists a fireplace inspection; ask (763-569-3330) which one covers a wood stove or insert.

Why does my installer need a Brooklyn Center license?

The city requires a city license for anyone installing or altering heating and ventilating systems, on top of the state’s $25,000 bond. The $60 license runs May to April and is approved by the City Council at a regular meeting, so a contractor without one may need a few weeks. Ask for the license before you sign.

Can I use a backyard fire pit on air-quality alert days?

No. Brooklyn Center’s recreational fire rules ban outdoor fires during a city or DNR burning ban and whenever the MPCA declares an air quality alert. Fires must be out by midnight and 25 feet from buildings and property lines. The rule covers outdoor fires, not an indoor stove, but alert days are worth watching.
