Wood stove permits in Chaska.

Chaska Building Inspections issues the permit.

Inside Chaska, the Building Inspections Department at One City Hall Plaza enforces the state building code adopted by the city. Its mechanical permits page says a permit is required before new equipment is installed, naming fireplaces among the examples. The city’s fireplace permit application asks for each unit’s manufacturer, model and fuel type, including wood, requires installation to the maker’s instructions, which must be on site, and lists a final inspection on completion. Fireplace and mechanical permits that need no plan review can be filed online through SmartGov; others go by email to inspections@chaskamn.gov. Call 952-448-9395 to book inspections and confirm which form a freestanding stove uses.

City of Chaska: mechanical permits

Downtown historic homes need a Site Alteration Permit.

Chaska’s heritage preservation ordinance, Chapter 10.5 of the City Code, sets up a seven-member Heritage Preservation Commission and a Chaska Historic District covering downtown blocks around City Square. Section 32 requires a Site Alteration Permit before any work that affects the exterior appearance of a designated historic resource or any building in the district. A new chimney, chase or roof vent for a stove changes the exterior, so if your home is designated or in the district, ask Planning before you sign a contract.

Allow a month for historic review.

Chaska’s Site Alteration Permit sheet says applicants should meet Planning staff before design, then submit photographs, elevations, materials and a written description by the deadline. The Heritage Preservation Commission holds a public hearing on every complete application, with notice mailed to owners within 350 feet, and the sheet says to allow 20 to 30 days to the hearing. Minor work that meets approved guidelines may be approved by the Planning Director. HPC decisions can be appealed to the City Council.

What the fireplace application asks for.

Chaska’s fireplace permit application covers up to two fireplace systems and asks for the manufacturer, model number and fuel type of each, with gas, wood or other boxes, plus the contractor’s license number. It lists a rough-in inspection, which includes a gas-line pressure test for gas units, and a final inspection once the system is complete. Installation must follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and those instructions must be on site for inspections, so keep the manual after unboxing.

File simple permits online.

Chaska’s Building Inspections page says permits that do not need plan review, including residential mechanical and fireplace permits, can be filed online through the city’s SmartGov portal after creating an account. Permits that need plan review are emailed to inspections@chaskamn.gov as PDFs with plans. Inspections are scheduled at 952-448-9395 or by email. Ask whether your stove or insert needs plan review, for example if it involves a new chimney.

What to ask a Chaska installer.

  1. Will you file a Chaska fireplace permit through SmartGov with the stove’s make, model and wood fuel type, and leave the manual on site for inspection?
  2. Is my house a designated historic resource or in the Chaska Historic District, and if so who prepares the Site Alteration Permit for a new chimney or vent?
  3. Is the stove or insert EPA-certified to 2020 standards, and will you install a full-length liner sized to it?

Answers before you request a quote

Chaska wood stove installation FAQs.

Which permit covers a wood stove in Chaska?

Chaska’s mechanical permits page says a permit is needed before installing new equipment, naming fireplaces, and the city has a fireplace permit application with a ‘Wood’ fuel option. Fireplace permits without plan review can be filed online through SmartGov. Ask Building Inspections (952-448-9395) whether a freestanding stove uses the fireplace or mechanical form.

Does Chaska’s historic district affect a stove project?

It can. Chaska requires a Site Alteration Permit, decided by the Heritage Preservation Commission after a public hearing, for any work that changes the exterior of a designated historic resource or a building in the downtown Chaska Historic District. A new chimney, chase or roof vent changes the exterior. Allow 20 to 30 days from application to hearing.

Can I install my own wood insert in Chaska?

Chaska lets a homeowner apply for a mechanical permit and do alteration, repair or remodel work only if they own and occupy the home as a homesteaded primary residence; rented homes do not qualify. Installation must follow the manufacturer’s instructions, which must be on site for inspection. New construction work must be done by a state-bonded contractor.
