Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Coon Rapids.

Coon Rapids Building Inspections issues a mechanical permit.

Inside Coon Rapids, permits come from the city’s Building Inspections division at City Hall, 11155 Robinson Drive NW, not Anoka County. Its residential permit page lists Fireplace as a permit type that can be filed through BS&A Online or on the PDF mechanical application, which you can email, mail or bring in. That application has boxes for a Wood Burning Unit and a Chimney/Flue, asks whether the applicant is the owner-occupant or a contractor, and asks for a project valuation including labour. The city says the person responsible for the work must apply. Call 763-767-6476 to confirm what your stove needs.

Coon Rapids residential building permits

Backyard fires need no permit but have set hours.

Coon Rapids allows recreational fires without a permit under City Code 12-415, from 8 a.m. to midnight and for no more than 6 hours. Fires are limited to 3 feet across and about 3 feet high, 25 feet from any structure, with a responsible adult present and no fires in winds over 15 mph. Only clean dry wood at least 1 inch thick may be burned. Police or fire officers can withdraw permission for dryness, nuisance or rule violations.

The mechanical form names wood-burning units.

Coon Rapids’ Mechanical Permit Application lists Wood Burning Unit, Chimney/Flue and Fireplace (Gas) as separate residential work types, and asks for the contractor’s license number. It says the permit becomes void if work does not begin within 180 days or stops for more than 180 days, that periodic and final inspections are required by the state building code, and that the applicant must call 763-767-6476 to schedule them.

Mechanical fees follow the job’s valuation.

Coon Rapids’ 2026 fee schedule prices mechanical permits for heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation from a valuation table, with exceptions such as a residential one-item, one-trip job at $62 plus a $1 state surcharge. A 35% plan review fee may be added to mechanical permits when applicable, and investigation or re-inspection fees can apply. Ask your installer which rate the stove job falls under.
