Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Maple Grove.

Apply through Maple Grove’s ePermits portal.

Inside Maple Grove, permits come from the city’s Building Inspections department at 12800 Arbor Lakes Parkway N., not Hennepin County. The city says a permit is required before a building is altered or repaired, and all residential permits must be submitted online through ePermits; contractors should apply for their own. Its 2026 fee schedule has a mechanical line for a fireplace or appliance added outside an original permit, and a separate line pricing masonry or factory-built wood-burning fireplaces by project valuation. Ask which applies to your stove or insert. Permits expire if no work starts or inspections are called within 180 days. Questions go to 763-494-6060 or building@maplegrovemn.gov.

Maple Grove permits

Backyard fires need an annual city permit.

Maple Grove requires residents to hold a recreational fire permit, which is free but expires every December 31. The fire department’s policy allows fires only in sustained winds under 10 mph, with clean, untreated wood cut under 3 feet long, and bans burning treated or painted wood, yard waste and brush. Open fires are limited to 3 feet across and 2 feet high, 25 feet from combustibles; fires in metal, clay or concrete devices need 15 feet.

Hiring out? Mechanical contractors need a bond.

Maple Grove has no city contractor licenses, but says its building department verifies state licensing and that a bond is required for mechanical contractors. The city’s exemption for owners doing their own general construction work excludes mechanical work, gas fitting, plumbing and electrical, so ask the building department before doing any stove or venting work yourself. It points contractors to the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry for licensing details.

Keep the stamped plans and permit card on site.

Maple Grove says all permitted work requires an inspection, and that approved, stamped plans and the permit and inspection card must be on the job site. Inspections are scheduled through Building Inspection Services, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Before making a final payment, the city advises confirming every inspection has been scheduled and completed.
