Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Maplewood.

Maplewood’s Building Department issues the mechanical permit.

Inside Maplewood, the Building Department at City Hall, 1830 County Road B East, issues permits; Saint Paul’s DSI and Ramsey County don’t. Maplewood’s Fireplace page says a mechanical permit is required for setting a gas or wood fireplace, and that the unit must be UL listed and installed to the manufacturer’s specifications. The page doesn’t mention freestanding stoves or inserts, so ask the department (651-249-2300, building@maplewoodmn.gov) which permit line your appliance needs. Residential mechanical permits skip plan review and are processed in the order received, within about five business days of a complete submittal by mail, drop box or, for card payments, email.

City of Maplewood: Fireplace

A ‘friendly neighbor’ rule covers backyard smoke.

Maplewood’s fire department says smoke from fires should not unreasonably cause discomfort or a negative impact on neighboring properties, and a fire found to be a nuisance must be put out. Recreational fires have needed no permit since November 14, 1994, but must be no more than 3 feet across and 3 feet high, 25 feet from any structure, supervised, and burned from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. using only clean dry wood or charcoal. These rules cover outdoor fires; we found no Maplewood rule limiting indoor stoves.

City of Maplewood: Recreation Fires

Your installer needs a Maplewood license.

Maplewood requires all mechanical contractors, residential and commercial, to be licensed by the city, renewed annually; a state license is sufficient only for residential building, plumbing and electrical contractors. Applications go through the city’s online portal with a certificate of insurance naming the City of Maplewood and a copy of the contractor’s state mechanical bond. Ask any installer for its Maplewood license before you sign, since it is needed to apply for the mechanical permit.

City of Maplewood: Contractor Licenses

The permit form has a wood fireplace line.

Maplewood’s mechanical permit application, updated November 2023, lists ‘Set Fireplace – Gas or Wood’ at $40 alongside gas piping and ductwork, each with a $1 surtax on the total. It asks whether the house was built before 1978; if so, a lead-safe certificate is needed, or the applicant marks that lead rules don’t apply. If the job also runs or caps a gas line, that is a separate $40 line.

What to ask a Maplewood installer.

  1. Does your company hold a current City of Maplewood mechanical contractor license, and will you apply for the mechanical permit?
  2. Which line on Maplewood’s mechanical permit form will this stove or insert go under, and is the unit UL listed?
  3. Will the job involve any gas line work, such as capping an old gas fireplace line, and is that priced and permitted separately?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

Answers before you request a quote

Maplewood wood stove installation FAQs.

Do I need a permit for a wood stove in Maplewood?

Plan on one. Maplewood’s Fireplace page says a mechanical permit is required for setting a gas or wood fireplace, and the mechanical form has a $40 ‘Set Fireplace – Gas or Wood’ line. Neither names freestanding stoves or inserts, so call the Building Department at 651-249-2300 to confirm which line applies before you buy.

Is Maplewood covered by Saint Paul’s stove permit?

No. Maplewood is a separate city in Ramsey County with its own Building Department at 1830 County Road B East. Saint Paul’s fireplace and wood stove permit, and its homestead rule for owners, don’t apply here. If your mailing address says Saint Paul, check which city your property is actually in before applying.

Can I install the stove myself in Maplewood?

Maplewood says a homeowner who owns and occupies the property can apply for residential mechanical permits, except for gas work under Minnesota Statutes 326B.802. If you hire someone, the contractor needs a City of Maplewood license to apply. Either way, the unit must be UL listed and installed to the manufacturer’s instructions.
