Its stove-installation page says it supplies and installs freestanding wood stoves, fireplace insert wood stoves and EPA-certified models, including the stove, flue and venting. It mentions Kansas City and Johnson County codes, not Independence’s. Its homepage names Independence as a Missouri service area. It is based in Olathe, Kansas; ask who holds the Independence master license for the permit.

Inside Independence city limits, permits come from Community Development’s Building Inspections Division at 20201 E. Jackson Drive (816-325-7401). The city says electrical, plumbing and HVAC work require permits, lists an online permit portal, and says it follows the 2024 IRC and IBC. Its posted mechanical code amendments say a heating permit goes only to a licensed Master Heating/Cooling Contractor or to an owner personally doing the work in the detached single-family home they own and occupy. No city page we read names wood stoves or inserts, so ask the division which permit covers the stove, liner and chimney. Kansas City, Missouri addresses are a separate jurisdiction.
City of Independence: Building Permits & InspectionsIndependence has one local historic district, the Harry S Truman Heritage District. The city’s preservation FAQ says any significant exterior alteration to a locally designated property, whether or not it needs a building permit, requires Heritage Commission approval through a Certificate of Appropriateness. Its examples include removing historic chimneys and changing exterior materials such as roofing. Interior work is not reviewed. A new flue, chase or cap may count, so call preservation staff at 816-325-7419 first.
City of Independence: Historic Preservation FAQsIndependence’s 2024 mechanical code amendments (posted ordinance text dated 11/6/24) say a heating permit may be issued only to a licensed Master Heating/Cooling Contractor or to a person personally doing the work in a detached single-family home they own and occupy. Starting required work without a permit adds a fee equal to the original permit fee. A heating permit expires if work does not begin within 180 days of issue.
City of Independence: 2024 IMC Mechanical Code Amendments (PDF)The city’s contractor-license FAQ says anyone hired for permittable work in Independence needs a city contractor license, with Master Mechanical covering HVAC work. All building permits require a master license holder to apply, and journeymen cannot obtain or be listed on permits. Licenses belong to individuals, not companies, and expire every December 31. A business license alone does not show the contractor is qualified.
City of Independence: FAQ for Contractor LicensesIndependence’s fire code amendments prohibit open burning of household refuse and yard waste, require a Fire Department permit for outdoor recreational or ceremonial burning, and keep open burning at least 50 feet from structures. The Fire Chief may suspend burning permits in hazardous conditions, and burning during declared bans is enforced with a summons and fines. These rules cover outdoor fires; we found no city rule restricting indoor wood stoves.

Expect one. Independence says HVAC work requires a permit, and its mechanical code amendments say heating permits go to licensed master contractors or qualifying owner-occupants. The city pages we read do not name wood stoves, so call Building Inspections at 816-325-7401 to confirm the permit type before work starts.
Possibly. The mechanical code amendments allow a permit for a person personally doing the work in a detached single-family home they own and occupy. If you hire anyone, the city says they need an Independence contractor license, and only a master license holder can apply for the permit. The work still has to pass inspection.
We found no Independence or Missouri rule restricting indoor wood stoves. The Fire Chief can declare burn bans, but the fire code rules we read cover outdoor open and recreational burning. Kansas City, Missouri’s air-quality code does not apply here. That is not a guarantee, so ask the city before relying on a stove.
