Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Wentzville.

Apply to the Wentzville Building Division through SmartGov.

Inside Wentzville city limits, the Building Division at City Hall, 1001 Schroeder Creek Blvd. (636-327-5101, Permits@wentzvillemo.gov), issues permits. Since February 23, 2026, applications and inspection requests for new permits go through the city’s SmartGov portal. The city lists new electric, plumbing or HVAC work and remodels among the jobs that need a miscellaneous permit, which it says takes about five to seven business days. No city page names wood stoves, so confirm which permit covers a stove, insert or new chimney. A Wentzville mailing address may lie in unincorporated St. Charles County or a neighbouring city, which issue their own permits.

City of Wentzville: Building Permits

Outdoor burning is limited; indoor stoves aren’t addressed.

The Wentzville Fire Protection District says that since September 1, 2025, no open-burn permits are required, but open burning is allowed only in unincorporated St. Charles County from September 16 to April 14, limited to brush and vegetation. Household waste burning is prohibited. Recreational fires must use seasoned dry firewood, stay within 5 by 5 by 5 feet, burn no longer than three hours, and sit 50 feet from structures unless in a barbecue pit. We found no rule on indoor stove use, but that is not a guarantee.

Hiring an installer? Check the city license.

Wentzville’s building-permit page and miscellaneous permit form say all contractors, general and sub, must hold a City-issued contractor’s license before working in the city, renewed each year by February 28. The form asks for the HVAC contractor’s license number, and the permit holder must keep subcontractor names and license numbers current. Ask any installer, especially one based outside St. Charles County, whether its Wentzville license is valid.

Venting through the wall? Plan the siding patch.

Wentzville’s Building Division FAQ cites Resolution #23-1953 on workmanship and siding repairs: if a damaged plane or elevation has no suitable match, the entire plane or elevation must be replaced, and makers’ installation requirements must be met. A stove pipe or chase cut through siding on a newer home could trigger this, so ask your installer how it will flash and patch the wall.

In a subdivision? Ask the HOA too.

Wentzville’s permit form warns that city permit approval does not constitute subdivision approval and tells owners to contact their HOA. The city’s HOA/Subdivision Resource Guide (2012) notes that indentures often include architectural control and design review, separate from city ordinances. A new chimney or exterior chase in a Wentzville subdivision may need both.

What to ask a Wentzville installer.

  1. Does your company hold a current City of Wentzville contractor’s license, and will you apply for the permit through SmartGov?
  2. If the flue runs through an exterior wall, how will you patch the siding so it meets Wentzville’s matching rule?
  3. Does my subdivision’s HOA need to approve a new chimney or chase, and will you supply drawings for that review?

Answers before you request a quote

Wentzville wood stove installation FAQs.

Do I need a permit for a wood stove in Wentzville?

Expect one. Wentzville lists new HVAC work and remodels among the jobs needing a miscellaneous permit, applied for through its SmartGov portal since February 2026, and says these take about five to seven business days. No city page names wood stoves, so call the Building Division at 636-327-5101 to confirm.

Can I install a wood stove myself in Wentzville?

The city’s FAQ says homeowners may do work of a minor nature within their home under a permit, but if excessive violations are found at inspection, a licensed professional may be required. A stove and chimney is not minor work in most cases, so ask the Building Division before you start. Any contractor you hire needs a Wentzville license.

My home is in a newer Wentzville subdivision. Anything extra to check?

Yes. The city warns that its permit is not subdivision approval, and many indentures include architectural review. A new metal chimney or chase can also mean cutting siding, and Wentzville may require a whole plane replaced if the patch won’t match. Check with your HOA and installer early.
