Its site lists wood stoves and wood inserts from Quadra-Fire, Blaze King, Hearthstone and Vermont Castings, and its services page describes in-home estimates and installation by its own installers. It describes itself as the largest fireplace retailer in the Billings area. Ask whether it pulls the city mechanical permit and what the chimney or liner portion of the quote covers.

The City of Billings Building Division, on the 5th floor of City Hall at 316 N 26th Street, issues building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits and takes submittals through its online permit portal. None of the city pages checked name wood stoves or inserts, and the published mechanical fee schedule has no wood-stove line, only items such as appliance vents and appliances not classed elsewhere. Ask the Building Division (406-657-8270) which permit and inspections cover your stove, chimney or insert. The city states it does not issue permits for buildings outside city limits, so confirm the property is inside Billings before applying.
City of Billings Building DivisionMontana DEQ lists Yellowstone County among five counties that run their own air pollution control programs, with Yellowstone Air Pollution Control at 406-256-6841, and points residents to its Today’s Air site for hourly particulate readings. The city, county and RiverStone Health burning pages checked cover outdoor burning only; none described an indoor wood-stove ban. Ask the county program whether any residential wood-heating rule applies before relying on a stove for winter heat.
Montana DEQ open burningMany Billings-address homes sit in unincorporated Yellowstone County. The state Building Codes Program says state mechanical permits apply outside cities certified to issue their own, but residential buildings with fewer than five dwelling units are exempt. The City of Billings suggests calling City/County Planning, RiverStone Health and Yellowstone County Public Works before building outside city limits. No permit does not mean no standard: follow the stove’s listing instructions and check with your insurer.
Montana Building Codes Program: mechanical permitsMontana DEQ’s Alternative Energy Revolving Loan Program lends to individuals, among others, and says it finances EPA-certified low-emission pellet stoves or wood stoves. DEQ lists a maximum loan of $40,000, a maximum term of 10 years and a 2026 fixed rate of 3.5 percent (4.023% APR in its example), plus an origination fee and other closing costs. Check the current terms before choosing a stove.

Not necessarily. The City of Billings says it does not issue building, plumbing, mechanical or electrical permits for buildings outside city limits. Many addresses with a Billings mailing city are in unincorporated Yellowstone County, where the city suggests checking with City/County Planning, RiverStone Health and County Public Works, and where state mechanical permits exempt homes with fewer than five units.
The city and county burn rules we found cover outdoor burning, such as recreational fires and burn permits from the Fire Marshal or county Disaster & Emergency Services. We did not find an indoor wood-stove curtailment program for Billings. Yellowstone County runs its own air pollution control program, so ask it directly and watch DEQ’s air-quality readings during winter inversions.
Montana DEQ’s Alternative Energy Revolving Loan Program says it finances EPA-certified low-emission wood stoves for eligible individuals. It is a loan, not a rebate: DEQ lists a fixed 2026 rate, a maximum term of 10 years, and origination and closing fees. Check current terms with DEQ and ask your installer for a model with EPA certification.
