Its Rome page says Rome is about 55 minutes from the East Syracuse showroom and a regular run, and that its own in-house crew handles the unit, venting, gas and electrical after an in-home inspection. Its site lists wood stoves and wood inserts. The Rome page itself doesn’t name wood installs, so confirm that, and ask who files the Rome permit.

Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Rome.

Get a permit from Rome Code Enforcement.

Inside city limits, permits come from the Department of Code Enforcement at City Hall, 198 North Washington Street (315-339-7642), which enforces the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code. Its page lists installing any wood-burning appliance, such as a woodstove or fireplace, and installing a chimney liner or repairing a chimney among work generally needing a permit, and says to contact the office to confirm. The HVAC permit application has a ‘Wood’ fuel option and asks for the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Ask which form your stove goes on. Surrounding towns, such as Floyd, run their own permit offices.

Historic district: check your property’s class first.

Rome’s Application for Historic District Review, filed with Community and Economic Development (315-339-7643), asks for photographs of existing conditions and to-scale drawings. Properties are classed A to E in the city’s Historic District Inventory. A and B properties must go to the Planning Board for a recommendation before the city acts, and so must C properties when work changes floor or roof area, siding, doors or windows; you attend the meeting. A new chimney or roof flue on a classified building may need this review.

Small alterations start at $75.

Rome’s building permit fee schedule, posted January 2026, charges $75 for alterations and renovations to one- and two-family homes. In multiple dwellings, work on a heating, ventilation, air-conditioning or plumbing system is $200. Renewals cost half the original fee, and partial refunds depend on whether review has begun. There is no separate line for wood stoves, so ask which fee applies, and remember the fee doubles if work starts before the permit.

Outdoor wood boilers go through the Fire Department.

The same fee schedule lists outdoor wood boilers separately: the $100 fee is paid in Codes, but the permit itself is obtained from the Rome Fire Department. That line covers outdoor boilers, not indoor room stoves. If you are weighing an outdoor boiler instead of a stove, start with the Fire Department, and note that state DEC rules for outdoor wood boilers also apply.

National Register listing adds no new rules.

The Rome Residential Historic District, posted by the city in February 2025, is listed on the State and National Registers. The city says properties in it face no new regulations, and that the local Historic and Scenic Preservation District is separate. Owners may qualify for a state historic tax credit of 20% of repair costs, but all work must be approved by the state Division for Historic Preservation before it begins.

What to ask a Rome installer.

  1. Will you file the Rome Code Enforcement permit before work starts, and which application and fee will it be?
  2. Is a new chimney liner part of the job, and will it be on the same permit?
  3. Is my house classed in Rome’s Historic District Inventory, and will an exterior chimney need historic district review?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

Answers before you request a quote

Rome wood stove installation FAQs.

Does a wood stove need a permit in Rome?

Yes, in general. Rome’s Code Enforcement page lists installing any wood-burning appliance, and installing a chimney liner or repairing a chimney, among work that usually needs a permit, and asks you to call 315-339-7642 to confirm. Work started without a permit can get a stop-work order and a doubled fee.

I live in the historic district. Does that change anything?

It can. Rome’s local district review classes properties A to E. A and B properties, and some C properties, go to the Planning Board for a recommendation before the city decides, and you present the request yourself. Interior work may not be affected, but a new exterior chimney or roof flue could be. Check your property’s class with Community and Economic Development first.

How cold does Rome get, and will a stove heat the house?

The Griffiss airfield station averages 21.5°F in January (1991–2020 normals), so power outages in winter are a real concern. A wood stove can keep one or two rooms usable during an outage, but it is not whole-home heat. Plan for a sound, lined chimney, dry wood storage and the city permit.
