Wood stove permits in Fargo.

Get an HVAC permit from Fargo Inspections.

Inside Fargo, the Inspections Department at City Hall, 225 Fourth Street North, issues heating and mechanical permits. Its HVAC fee schedule, effective January 1, 2025, lists solid-fuel (wood or coal) burning space heating stoves as a separate item. It charges double fees for work started without a permit and says that in an emergency a permit must be taken out within 48 hours after work begins. The city says owners may do HVAC installation themselves only in owner-occupied homes. West Fargo, and Moorhead across the Red River in Minnesota, have their own permit offices.

Outdoor burning stops when fire danger is high.

Fargo Fire Department rules allow recreational fires without a permit, burning only good dry wood, at least 25 feet from structures, or 15 feet in an approved container. Any recreational fire that is offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor is prohibited, and all open burning is banned when the fire index is high, very high or extreme, or during a red flag warning. These rules cover outdoor fires; an indoor stove goes through the HVAC permit.

Historic overlay? Certificate before permit.

Fargo says any construction work that affects the exterior of a structure and requires a building permit in a historic overlay district needs a Certificate of Appropriateness before the permit is issued. It lists eight districts: Roberts Street, 8th Street South, Island Park, Woodruffs, Erskines, Chas A Roberts, Jefferson Neighborhood and Oak Grove. A new chimney or a stovepipe through a visible roof may fall under this, so check before ordering materials.

Owner installs: owner-occupied homes only.

Fargo’s HVAC permit page says you may do HVAC installation, such as a furnace, AC, water heater or gas lines, yourself only if the home is owner occupied, and all other mechanical work must be done by a licensed contractor. Homeowners turn in a Mechanical Permit Application from the city’s forms page. The city describes a rough-in inspection before insulation or sheetrock and a final inspection after completion.

New installation, no chimney$5,500–$9,000+

What to ask a Fargo installer.

  1. Will you take out Fargo’s HVAC permit for a solid-fuel space heating stove before work starts?
  2. Is my address in Fargo, West Fargo or Moorhead, and are you licensed for that jurisdiction?
  3. If I’m in a historic overlay district, will you wait for the Certificate of Appropriateness before chimney work?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

There is no reliable single savings figure for every Fargo home. Fargo wood stove installation FAQs.

I live in Moorhead. Does this guide apply?

Not the local rules. Moorhead is across the Red River in Minnesota, with its own city permit office and Minnesota’s building code. The Fargo fee schedule, owner-occupied rule and historic overlay districts described here apply only inside Fargo, and West Fargo is also a separate city. Check your own city’s building department before buying equipment.

Can I install a wood stove myself in Fargo?

The city says owners may do HVAC installation themselves only if the home is owner occupied, and all other mechanical work must be done by a licensed contractor. Homeowners turn in a Mechanical Permit Application. Ask Inspections whether a solid-fuel stove and its chimney fall under that allowance for your house before starting.

How should Fargo’s cold affect backup heat planning?

NOAA’s 1991–2020 January normal at FARGO 3S is 7.6°F. A monthly average does not show the coldest nights or how long an outage might last, so plan backup heat with your installer, including fuel storage and room layout, rather than counting on a stove to heat the whole house.
