Its West Fargo store is inside the city. Its fireplaces page lists EPA-certified wood-burning fireplaces and stoves from brands such as Jotul, Kuma and Osburn, says its in-house fireplace division handles design through install, and carries the line ‘We Install It. We Maintain It.’ It doesn’t describe stove installs separately, so ask whether it installs your model and pulls the West Fargo permit.

Wood stove permits in West Fargo.

West Fargo Building & Inspections issues it.

West Fargo has its own Building & Inspections Division at City Hall, 2515 6th Street E (701-515-5380, weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), separate from the City of Fargo’s inspections office. The city’s permit FAQ says all HVAC systems require permits, including gas appliances and wood stoves, with separate electrical and plumbing permits. Title 7 of the city code adopts the 2024 International Mechanical Code and covers heating plants and chimney flues in the city and its extraterritorial zoning area. Residential applications go through the city’s online application system. Ask whether your stove or insert is filed as a mechanical permit and whether a new chimney or framing also needs a building permit.

West Fargo FAQ: When do I need a permit?

Outdoor fires stop at high fire danger.

West Fargo’s fire department allows recreational fires only in an approved container at least 25 feet from structures, decks and fences, burning only small branches and split logs, and always attended. A neighbor’s smoke or odor complaint means the fire is put out, and all open burning is banned when the fire danger index is high, very high or extreme. These rules cover outdoor fires; we found no city limit on indoor stove use.

Hiring out? Ask for the Certificate of Authority.

Title 7 bars anyone from installing or repairing heating plants and combustion units in West Fargo, or advertising that work, without a city Certificate of Authority, except owner-occupants doing their own home. Master heating contractors post a $5,000 annual bond with the city, and the exam can be waived for holders of a current Fargo or Moorhead certificate. Ask your installer whether its certificate covers your stove job.

What to ask a West Fargo installer.

  1. Will you pull the West Fargo permit for the stove, and do you hold a West Fargo Certificate of Authority?
  2. Does my job need a building permit as well, for a new chimney, chase or framing?
  3. Is the stove you’re quoting EPA-certified, and does the price include the chimney or liner?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.
