Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Hamilton.

Ask Hamilton’s Building Department about the HVAC permit.

Inside Hamilton, the Building Department at 345 High Street (513-785-7360, option 1; building@hamilton-oh.gov) reviews plans and issues permits under the building and mechanical codes. Its HVAC / Refrigeration Permit Application asks for the number of heating units added or replaced and has an owner-occupant option for existing single-family homes, but it does not name wood stoves, inserts or chimney liners. Ask which permit covers your stove, insert and venting before work starts. Confirm the property is inside Hamilton city limits; nearby Butler County cities and townships are permitted separately.

Air Quality Alert days: skip non-essential fires.

The Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency, a division of Hamilton County Environmental Services, covers Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Hamilton and Warren counties. It issues an Air Quality Alert when ozone or particulate matter may reach an AQI of 101, and says alerts can occur in winter because of high particle levels. On alert days it asks residents to avoid fire pits or fireplaces for non-essential heating, and it recommends burning only clean, seasoned wood. EnviroFlash sign-up sends alerts.

Registered contractors pull HVAC permits, unless you do it yourself.

Hamilton requires contractor registration for any HVAC, gas, electric, plumbing or hydronic work that needs a permit, and only the Master Registration holder or an authorized representative may apply. Registration is not needed when the owner or immediate family owns and occupies a single-family home and does the work personally. The city says a permit is still required before work starts and inspections must be approved. Ask a hired installer whether it holds a Hamilton HVAC registration.

A new chimney in a historic district needs a COA first.

Any exterior work on a structure in one of Hamilton’s historic areas or on a property listed by ordinance requires a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Architectural Design Review Board. The city names the Dayton-Campbell, German Village and Rossville-Main Street districts plus inventory properties. Like-for-like work can get staff approval, typically within two business days; larger changes go to the board, which meets on the first and third Tuesdays. Call Planning at 513-785-7350 before submitting.

  1. Do you hold a City of Hamilton HVAC registration, and which permit will you pull for the stove and liner?
  2. If my house is in German Village, Dayton-Campbell or Rossville, will you supply drawings for the Certificate of Appropriateness?
  3. Is your crew coming from Franklin, Loveland or Cincinnati, and how does that affect scheduling and service calls?

Can I install a wood stove myself in Hamilton?

Hamilton’s contractor-registration page says registration is not needed when the owner, or immediate family, owns and lives in a single-family home and does the work personally.
