Its site lists sales and installation of inserts, freestanding stoves and Class A chimney systems, sized to the home, and names Bethlehem in its service area. Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Bethlehem.

File a mechanical permit with Code Enforcement.

Inside Bethlehem city limits, in both the Lehigh and Northampton County parts, permits come from the Bureau of Code Enforcement (610-865-7091), part of the city offices at 10 East Church Street. The city says almost any construction or remodeling needs a permit. Its mechanical permit application covers new, replacement and conversion installs and has a line for fireplace and solid fuel burning appliances. Contractors must file workers’ compensation proof and a city business license; the city says a property owner may secure the mechanical permit and do the work. Inspections are by city inspectors. Bethlehem Township and Hellertown are separate municipalities; confirm which one you are in.

Historic or conservation district? Certificate before permits.

Bethlehem has three overlay districts where a Certificate of Appropriateness is required before building permits are issued: the Bethlehem Historic District north of the Lehigh River, reviewed by HARB, and the South Bethlehem Historic Conservation District and Mount Airy Neighborhood District, reviewed by the Historic Conservation Commission. The boards recommend and City Council issues or denies the certificate. HARB meets the first Wednesday (applications four weeks ahead); HCC meets the third Monday (two weeks ahead).

Bethlehem: Historic and Conservation Districts

Wood stoves have their own permit fee.

Bethlehem’s Codified Ordinances Article 1702, last amended by an ordinance passed November 18, 2025, sets a mechanical permit fee of $45.00 for installing a fireplace, wood burning stove or coal stove, separate from the per-device fee for other residential mechanical equipment, with a state fee added to all permits. Ask your installer to show the permit fee as its own line in the quote.

HARB discourages new visible chimney stacks.

Bethlehem’s Historic District Design Guidelines, for the district roughly bounded by New Street, First Avenue, the Lehigh River, Broad Street and Walnut Street, encourage keeping decorative roof elements such as chimneys. They discourage adding rooftop features visible from a public way, naming chimney stacks and mechanical equipment. If a stove needs a new flue in this district, ask about a route that is not visible from the street.

What to ask a Bethlehem installer.

  1. Will you file Bethlehem’s mechanical permit for a solid fuel appliance, and is the city’s wood stove fee plus state fee shown separately?
  2. My house is in the Bethlehem Historic District, South Bethlehem or Mount Airy; will you prepare the HARB or HCC application if the flue or cap is visible?
  3. Do you serve both the Lehigh and Northampton County sides of Bethlehem?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

Answers before you request a quote

Bethlehem wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I pull my own wood stove permit in Bethlehem?

Bethlehem’s residential construction page says a mechanical permit may be secured and the work performed by the property owner. Contractors must file workers’ compensation proof and a city business license. The mechanical application has a line for solid fuel burning appliances, and city inspectors do the inspections; call 610-865-7091 first to confirm what your job needs.

Does it matter whether I’m on the north or south side?

For historic review, yes. North of the Lehigh River, the Bethlehem Historic District goes to HARB, which meets the first Wednesday with applications due four weeks ahead. South Bethlehem and Mount Airy go to the Historic Conservation Commission, which meets the third Monday. Either way, City Council issues the certificate before permits.

Is Bethlehem Township the same as the city?

No. Bethlehem Township is a separate municipality with its own permit office; installers such as Lehigh Valley Chimney list it separately from Bethlehem city ZIP codes. City permits, fees and historic districts described here apply only inside Bethlehem city limits, in both Lehigh and Northampton counties.
