Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in East Providence.

Building Inspection at City Hall issues it.

Inside East Providence, permits come from the Building Inspection Division, 2nd floor of City Hall, 145 Taunton Avenue, room 204 (401-435-7722), open Monday to Wednesday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday until 6 p.m. and Friday until 1 p.m. The division enforces the Rhode Island State Building Code and issues building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical permits; its staff includes one plumbing-mechanical inspector. The city says permits are required for most improvements and to contact the building inspector before starting. City pages do not name wood stoves, so ask which permit a stove, insert or liner needs. Providence, Pawtucket and Seekonk, Massachusetts, issue their own permits.

Historic zoning is narrow here.

East Providence’s historic area zoning, adopted in 2007, designates only two districts. In Hunt’s Mills, exterior construction, alteration or repair needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic District Commission before the building inspector may issue a permit. Rumford, the old civic center around Pleasant Street, is listed but protected solely by the ordinance’s demolition and removal criteria, so a new chimney or vent there should not need a certificate. Confirm your parcel with the Planning Department.

East Providence Code Ch. 19, Art. X, Historic Area Zoning (Municode)

Small jobs pay a flat fee; starting early costs $250.

Sec. 4-16 of East Providence’s ordinances sets building permit fees by job value: $95 flat up to $5,000, then a 0.019 factor with a $95 minimum from $5,001 to $10,000, and $200 flat from $10,001 to $20,000. Boilers, furnaces and heating systems under 200,000 BTUs and other mechanical permits are charged on the same table. A $250 late charge applies when work starts before a permit, waivable once per property for emergencies.

East Providence Code Ch. 4, Art. II, Permits (Municode)

Ask Fire Prevention before you schedule.

Sec. 4-20 says anyone installing mechanical equipment in an existing structure, or making changes that may affect a building’s fire safety, must first apply to the city Fire Prevention Office for inspection and plan review at least 21 calendar days before work starts, and no work may begin until it is approved. Its plan review fee table lists $75 for a single-family dwelling and $125 for a two- or three-family. Ask whether a wood stove triggers this review.

What to ask a East Providence installer.

  1. Will you file the East Providence permit at City Hall, and does the job need a building permit, a mechanical permit or both?
  2. Have you checked with East Providence Fire Prevention whether this stove needs its 21-day plan review, and is that fee in the quote?
  3. What value will you list on the permit, and does the fee stay in the city’s $95 flat band for work up to $5,000?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Answers before you request a quote

East Providence wood stove installation FAQs.

How much is a permit for a wood stove in East Providence?

The city’s ordinance charges a $95 flat building permit fee for work valued up to $5,000, and uses the same table for heating systems and other mechanical permits. Larger jobs rise in bands. Starting work before the permit adds a $250 late charge. City pages do not say how a stove is valued, so ask Building Inspection at 401-435-7722.

Does the fire department need to see my stove plans?

Possibly. Sec. 4-20 of the city code asks anyone installing mechanical equipment in an existing structure to apply to the Fire Prevention Office at least 21 days before work, and lists a $75 plan review fee for a single-family house. It is not clear how this is applied to one-family stove jobs, so ask before you book an install date.

My house is in Rumford. Do I need historic approval for a chimney?

Probably not for a chimney alone. East Providence’s historic zoning lists Rumford as protected solely by its demolition and removal criteria, while Hunt’s Mills gets full Certificate of Appropriateness review before any permit. Demolishing or removing part of a Rumford structure is still reviewed. Confirm your parcel with the Planning Department before applying.
