Its Salt Lake County page says it serves homeowners throughout the county, and one of its three installation packages fits a gas, wood or electric insert into an existing firebox; the rest of that page leans toward gas. Its Salt Lake City store page lists wood stove installation and venting. Magna is not in its named-city list, so ask whether it works there and which wood units are EPA certified.

Magna’s Building Permits and Inspections page says a building permit must be purchased from the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District (MSD) for listed projects, including installing or replacing any fireplace (wood or gas) or woodstove, furnaces and ductwork. The MSD reviews building, mechanical and fire drawings and inspects the work; its office is at 860 W Levoy Drive, Suite 300, Taylorsville (385-910-7138). You create a Cityworks account to apply, print the permit and schedule inspections, and MSD-stamped plans must be on site, printed full size. Neither page lists stove-specific documents, so ask what the MSD needs for the listing, clearances and chimney or liner.
Magna: Building Permits and InspectionsSalt Lake County Health Regulation #35 covers Magna. From November 1 through March 1 it prohibits burning solid fuel on voluntary action days as well as mandatory ones, as set by Utah’s Division of Air Quality, after a burn-down period of no more than three hours. Homes registered with DAQ as a sole source of heat are exempt. The regulation says a temporary sole-source exemption may be granted if the oil, natural gas, electric or propane heat fails, so ask the county how that works before you count on a stove in an outage.
Salt Lake County Health Regulation #35, Solid Fuel Burning (PDF, adopted 2015)Utah Admin. Code R307-302-6 says no person shall sell, offer for sale, supply, install or transfer a wood burning stove that is not EPA certified, or a fireplace that is not EPA qualified. R307-302-2 applies it to all regions of Salt Lake County, so it covers every Magna address. An uncertified stove installed before March 6, 2014 may pass with a house in a sale if it stays in place, but an old stove moved into a new install will not.
Utah Admin. Code R307-302, Solid Fuel Burning DevicesMagna Code 15.08.011 says the 2024 International Wildland-Urban Interface Code, with amendments, applies to areas the council designates on the city’s official WUI map. The section, adopted in December 2025 and amended August 11, 2026, is annotated ‘no map adopted’. This guide has not checked what that code would require of a chimney, so if a map is adopted later, ask the MSD whether your address is inside it and what applies.
Magna Municipal Code Title 15, Buildings and ConstructionSalt Lake County’s Health Department says its Air Quality Bureau regulates wood and other solid-fuel burning countywide. On voluntary and mandatory action days from November 1 to March 1 it prohibits burning in fireplaces and wood stoves and bans outdoor fires, including patio pits and charcoal grill fires. The bureau, at 788 East Woodoak Lane in Murray (385-468-3837), investigates complaints, and notices of violation can bring penalties up to $299 per day.

No. Magna’s building page says permits must be purchased from the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District, and its list names installing or replacing any fireplace (wood or gas) or woodstove. You apply through the MSD’s Cityworks portal; call 385-910-7138 with the stove model and venting plan to ask what it needs.
Not automatically. Salt Lake County’s Regulation #35 bans burning on voluntary and mandatory action days from November 1 to March 1. A temporary sole-source exemption may be granted if your regular heating system fails, and this guide cannot promise it will be. Ask the county Air Quality Bureau (385-468-3837) how to request one before winter.
Not yet, as far as the code shows. Section 15.08.011 applies the 2024 International Wildland-Urban Interface Code only to areas on a council-designated map, and the code says no map has been adopted. That could change, so ask the MSD whether your address falls in a mapped area before you finalize the chimney design.
