Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Ogden.

Ogden Building Permits & Inspections issues the permit.

Ogden’s Building Permits & Inspections division says a permit is required to alter, change, extend, install, repair or replace a mechanical system, which is where a wood stove, insert or new chimney would fall. Residential permits are applied for online, and the city asks you to first confirm your address is inside Ogden City’s jurisdiction. It says to allow 1–3 days to process an application, takes a $70.50 deposit when the application is accepted, and lists installation manuals and cut or spec sheets among remodel documents. Its pages do not name wood stoves, so ask which permit type applies. The Permits Office is at 2549 Washington Blvd, Suite 220 (801-629-8950).

Ogden City: Permit Applications

Read this first: no burning on mandatory no-burn days.

Utah Admin. Code R307-302 covers all of Weber County west of the Wasatch mountain range, including Ogden. When the Division of Air Quality declares a mandatory no-burn period, no one may use a wood stove or fireplace unless it is the only heat for the whole home and registered with DAQ. The rule has no exemption for a power outage or a failed furnace. We found no Weber-Morgan Health Department rule that also bans burning on voluntary action days, when DAQ asks residents not to burn.

Buying a stove? It must be EPA certified.

R307-302-6 says no person shall sell, offer for sale, supply, install or transfer a wood burning stove that is not EPA certified, and the section applies in the Weber County area that includes Ogden. An uncertified stove installed before March 6, 2014 may pass with a house in a sale if it stays in place. The rule also bans burning garbage, plastic, treated wood and similar materials, and allows only seasoned wood.

Wood your only heat? Apply as a sole source.

Utah’s Division of Air Quality lists Weber County among the areas where wood fireplaces, wood stoves (EPA certified or not), pellet and coal stoves are prohibited on mandatory no-burn days, and says officers assess fines of up to $150. Only a device registered with DAQ as the home’s sole source of heat may burn during a mandatory period; the DAQ page links a Solid Fuel Residential Sole Source Heating Application for that.

In a historic district? Get Landmarks approval first.

Ogden’s Certificate of Historic Appropriateness application says the certificate must be issued by the Landmarks Commission before any building permit affecting a resource or district on the Ogden City Register of Historic Resources. It covers alterations and additions, asks for photos and working drawings, and has a monthly deadline of the first Thursday at 5 p.m. A new exterior chimney or flue on a listed home should be raised with Planning early.

What to ask a Ogden installer.

  1. Is this stove EPA certified under R307-302, and will you give me the certification paperwork for the Ogden permit file?
  2. Will you apply for the Ogden mechanical permit online and confirm my address is in Ogden City’s jurisdiction first?
  3. If wood will be my only heat, will you help me complete DAQ’s sole-source application before the no-burn season?

Answers before you request a quote

Ogden wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I use a wood stove in Ogden during a winter power outage?

Only if it is not a mandatory no-burn day, or your home is a registered sole source of heat. R307-302 bars solid-fuel burning in Weber County west of the Wasatch Range during DAQ mandatory periods and contains no exception for outages or furnace failure. Check the day’s action level for Weber County before relying on the stove.

Does Weber-Morgan Health Department have its own wood-burning rule?

We found none. Its adopted regulations cover food, pools, wastewater, tobacco and vehicle emissions testing, with no solid-fuel rule, and its air quality program focuses on vehicles. The state rule governs Ogden: burning is banned on mandatory days and DAQ asks residents not to burn on voluntary days.

Who issues the permit for a wood stove in Ogden?

Ogden’s Building Permits & Inspections division, through its online permit system. It requires a permit to install or replace mechanical systems but does not list wood-stove items, so ask which permit type applies. If the house is on the city’s historic register, the Landmarks Commission must approve first.
