Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Kenosha.

File with City Inspections before work starts.

Kenosha’s building code (Chapter IX, 9.06) requires a permit before anyone installs, alters or replaces a mechanical system it regulates. The Department of City Inspections, 625 52nd St., Room 100, publishes a Fireplace Permit application for one- and two-family homes (form DCI111, rev. 08/23). It requires the manufacturer’s installation instructions on site and lists rough and final inspections. Separately, code section 9.21 says only holders of a Wisconsin HVAC Qualifier Credential or a City HVAC license may install or modify permanent heating equipment. Ask City Inspections which form covers your wood stove or insert and whether HVAC licensing applies. The forms cover work within the City of Kenosha only.

Never burn plastic or rubber in the city.

Kenosha’s Chapter XXXI makes it unlawful to incinerate plastic or rubber inside city limits, citing the health impact. Fines run from $2,000 to $5,000, and each day of burning counts as a separate violation. That applies to a wood stove as much as a backyard fire. Burn only dry, untreated firewood, and keep packaging and household trash out of the firebox.

Historic structure? Only exterior changes need a certificate.

Section 15.10 of Kenosha’s zoning ordinance requires a Certificate of Appropriateness, filed with the Department of City Development, before exterior alteration of a historic structure or new construction in a historic district. Interior alterations are exempt, and like-for-like repairs are exempt if they don’t change the exterior. A stove on an existing chimney may need no review. A new exterior chimney or through-wall vent likely does.

Ask your installer for their HVAC credential.

Kenosha’s residential HVAC permit form asks for two credentials: a Wisconsin HVAC Qualifier Certification or an existing City of Kenosha HVAC license, plus a Wisconsin HVAC Contractor Registration. It says the city no longer issues new City HVAC licenses. If City Inspections treats your stove as heating equipment, the installer will need these, so ask for the numbers when you get quotes.

What to ask a Kenosha installer.

  1. Will you file Kenosha’s Fireplace Permit or HVAC permit for this stove, and schedule the rough and final inspections?
  2. Do you hold a Wisconsin HVAC Qualifier Certification and HVAC Contractor Registration, in case City Inspections treats the stove as heating equipment?
  3. If my home is a historic structure, will any exterior chimney or vent work need a Certificate of Appropriateness?

Answers before you request a quote

Kenosha wood stove installation FAQs.

Which Kenosha permit covers a wood stove?

City Inspections publishes a Fireplace Permit form for one- and two-family homes that requires the manufacturer’s installation instructions on site and rough and final inspections. The form doesn’t say whether it covers freestanding wood stoves, and the HVAC form lists fireplaces as a line item too. Call 262-653-4263 before work starts to confirm which one applies.

My address is Pleasant Prairie or Somers. Do Kenosha’s rules apply?

No. City Inspections says its permit forms cover work within the City of Kenosha only, and directs people elsewhere in Kenosha County to the county’s website. Pleasant Prairie, Somers and Bristol are outside the city, so check with your village or the county before hiring.

Can I burn scrap wood or packaging in a Kenosha wood stove?

Keep to dry, untreated firewood. Kenosha bans incinerating plastic or rubber anywhere in the city, with fines of $2,000 to $5,000 per day. Wisconsin’s Uniform Dwelling Code also requires solid-fuel appliances in one- and two-family homes to be tested and listed.
