Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in West Bend.

West Bend Building Inspection issues the permit.

Inside city limits, permits come from the City of West Bend Building Inspection department at 1115 S. Main Street (262-335-5140, inspect@westbendwi.gov), led by Building Inspection Superintendent Todd Meeks. The department says permits must be obtained before any building activity starts and schedules inspection requests within 24 to 48 hours. Its remodel and replacement application has a separate line for woodburning stoves and fireplaces, asks for the HVAC contractor’s credential number, and includes the cautionary statement Wisconsin requires from municipalities that enforce the Uniform Dwelling Code. If your address is in a surrounding town rather than the city, confirm which office covers it.

Fire pits: 25 feet back, clean wood only.

West Bend’s fire prevention code, section 5.213(7), allows recreational fires without a permit only in an approved pit or outdoor fireplace. An in-ground pit can be no wider than 36 inches and must sit 25 feet from any dwelling, shed or garage, 10 feet from wooden fences and decks, and 6 feet from property lines. Fuel must be natural wood or manufactured logs, and smoke must not drift into open windows or become a nuisance. These rules cover outdoor fires, not an indoor stove.

Unbonded contractors put risk on you.

West Bend’s permit application includes the statement Wisconsin Statutes s. 101.65(1r) requires: if an owner hires a contractor who is not bonded or insured as s. 101.654 requires, the owner may be held liable for injury or property damage caused by the work and may be unable to recover losses from the contractor. Owners initial the statement when they apply, so ask your stove installer for proof of bond and insurance first.
