Its stove page says it services and installs wood, pellet, gas and electric stoves and inserts, names Lopi, Morsø, Osburn and Mendota among its brands, and stocks single- and double-wall stove pipe and hearth pads. Inside city limits, the City of Gillette Building Division at City Hall, 201 E. 5th St., 2nd Floor, handles residential plan review, building inspections and contractor licensing (307-686-5260). Permits, plans and contractor licenses are applied for through the city’s Energov Citizen Self Service portal, which also schedules inspections and takes fees. Chapter 5 of the city code, revised June 2026, adopts the 2024 International Mechanical Code for the city’s incorporated areas, and its mechanical permit fee schedule names installing a furnace, woodstove or heating unit as a residential item. Ask the division whether your insert or chimney liner falls under the same mechanical permit. Outside city limits, ask Campbell County.
City of Gillette: Building DivisionGillette’s fire code amendments bar open burning and recreational fires unless approved under the code, and prohibit them when conditions make fires hazardous, such as a full or partial fire restriction issued by the Campbell County Commissioners. Outdoor fires must be attended by a sober adult with an extinguisher or hose on hand. These rules sit in the open-burning section. We found no Gillette or Wyoming rule limiting the use of an indoor wood stove.
Gillette City Code Chapter 5 (revised 6-2026)Gillette’s contractor licensing article says owners making repairs, alterations or improvements to their own residence that don’t involve structural elements are not treated as contractors. Tenants, lessees or employees can do the work only with the owner’s written authorization on a Building Division form. Electrical work is limited to the owner or a licensed electrical contractor. The permit and inspections still apply either way.
Gillette City Code Chapter 5 (revised 6-2026)Gillette’s residential inspection list calls for a rough mechanical inspection after all venting and ductwork are installed, before insulation and sheetrock go on, for new construction, alterations and additions. Inspection requests need the permit number and an IVR inspection code; to get a same-day inspection, call before 7:00 a.m. Field inspectors are generally in the office from 8 to 9 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m.
City of Gillette: List for Residential InspectionsCampbell County’s planning FAQ says that even where no zoning rules apply to a residential project, the county still requires permits for small wastewater systems, electrical, plumbing, road access and similar work. It does not mention stoves or mechanical work, so if your address is outside Gillette’s city limits, call the county’s offices at 307-682-1970 before installing.

Plan on one. Gillette’s city code lists installing a furnace, woodstove or heating unit as a residential mechanical permit item, and the city adopts the 2024 International Mechanical Code. Apply through the Energov Citizen Self Service portal or call the Building Division at 307-686-5260 to confirm what an insert or liner needs.
The city code says owners making non-structural repairs or improvements to their own home are not treated as contractors, so owner installs are allowed, while electrical work is limited to the owner or a licensed electrician. You still need the permit and inspections. A tenant can do the work only with the owner’s written authorization on a city form.
Gillette’s code ties fire restrictions to open burning and recreational fires: they are prohibited when the Campbell County Commissioners issue a full or partial restriction. Those rules sit in the open-burning section. We found no Gillette or Wyoming rule limiting an indoor wood stove, but check any restriction notice’s wording.
